في وداع الأباتي بولس نعمان: راهب الوطن وضمير الموارنة الأحرار

برحيل الأباتي بولس نعمان لا تفقد الرهبانية اللبنانية المارونية رئيساً عاماً سابقاً ومؤرخاً وباحثاً فحسب، بل يخسر لبنان واحداً من كبار رجاله الذين حملوا قضية الوطن في العقل والقلب والضمير، ودافعوا عنها بشجاعة الرهبان وقداسة المؤمنين وصلابة الرجال الأحرار.
كان الأباتي بولس نعمان مدرسة في الوطنية اللبنانية الأصيلة، وصوتاً مارونياً حراً لا يعرف المساومة عندما يتعلق الأمر بلبنان وهويته ورسالته وحريته وسيادته. عاش راهباً ملتزماً برسالته الكنسية، لكنه في الوقت نفسه كان مناضلاً فكرياً وثقافياً ووطنياً، حمل همّ لبنان في كل كتاباته وأبحاثه ومواقفه، ورفض أن ينحني أمام ثقافة الخوف أو أن يساير أصحاب المشاريع التي استهدفت الكيان اللبناني وهويته التاريخية.
كان من الجيل الذي آمن بلبنان الرسالة، لبنان الحر السيد المستقل، لبنان الذي حلم به البطريرك الحويك وصاغ فلسفته شارل مالك واستشهد من أجله بشير الجميّل ورفاقه الأبرار. ولهذا لم يكن غريباً أن يصفه النائب نديم الجميّل اليوم بأنه “رفيق البشير وصاحب الموقف الصلب”، لأن الأباتي نعمان بقي طوال حياته أميناً لقيم الحرية والكرامة والسيادة التي آمن بها بشير الجميّل ودفع حياته ثمناً لها.
لقد كتب التاريخ ولم يكن مجرد شاهد عليه. حفظ الذاكرة المارونية واللبنانية من التزوير، ووثّق المحطات المفصلية من تاريخ وطننا، مدركاً أن الأمم التي تفقد ذاكرتها تفقد مستقبلها. وفي زمن كثرت فيه المساومات والتنازلات، بقي الأباتي بولس نعمان ثابتاً كأرز الرب، لا يتلوّن ولا يبدّل قناعاته ولا يساوم على حقيقة لبنان.
اليوم، ونحن نودعه، نشعر بأن أرزة كبيرة من أرز لبنان قد سقطت، لكن جذورها ستبقى ضاربة في أرض الوطن، وستبقى أفكاره ومؤلفاته ومواقفه منارات تهدي الأجيال القادمة إلى درب الحقيقة والحرية. غير أن إيماننا المسيحي لا يعرف اليأس أمام الموت، لأن الموت بالنسبة للمؤمن ليس نهاية بل انتقال إلى الحياة الأبدية.
يقول الكتاب المقدس: “الرَّبُّ أَعْطَى وَالرَّبُّ أَخَذَ، فَلْيَكُنِ اسْمُ الرَّبِّ مُبَارَكًا.” (أيوب 1: 21)
ويقول الرب يسوع:”أَنَا هُوَ الْقِيَامَةُ وَالْحَيَاةُ. مَنْ آمَنَ بِي وَلَوْ مَاتَ فَسَيَحْيَا.” (يوحنا 11: 25)
ويضيف:”وَكُلُّ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا وَآمَنَ بِي فَلَنْ يَمُوتَ إِلَى الأَبَدِ.” (يوحنا 11: 26)
كما يعزّينا الرسول بولس بقوله: “قَدْ جَاهَدْتُ الْجِهَادَ الْحَسَنَ، وَأَكْمَلْتُ السَّعْيَ، وَحَفِظْتُ الإِيمَانَ.” (2 تيموثاوس 4: 7)
نعم، لقد جاهد الأباتي بولس نعمان الجهاد الحسن، وأكمل رسالته بأمانة، وحفظ إيمانه ولبنانه وكنيسته حتى النفس الأخير.
فلترقد نفسه بسلام في حضن الآب السماوي، وليكن ذكره مؤبداً بين الأبرار، ولتبقَ سيرته الوطنية والإيمانية نبراساً لكل لبناني حر يؤمن بلبنان السيد الحر المستقل، وطن الرسالة والقداسة والشهادة.
المجد لروحه، والراحة الأبدية لنفسه الطاهرة، والعزاء لعائلته ووفي مقدمهم إبن شقيته د شارل شرتوني ولأهله وللرهبانية اللبنانية المارونية ولجميع اللبنانيين الذين فقدوا برحيله راهباً كبيراً ومفكراً استثنائياً وأحد حراس هوية لبنان التاريخية.

With the passing of Abbot Paul Naaman, the Lebanese Maronite Order loses not only a former Superior General, historian, and scholar, but Lebanon itself loses one of its great men—one who carried the cause of the nation in his mind, heart, and conscience, and defended it with the courage of monks, the faith of believers, and the steadfastness of free men.
Abbot Paul Naaman was a school of authentic Lebanese patriotism and a free Maronite voice that knew no compromise when it came to Lebanon, its identity, its mission, its freedom, and its sovereignty. He lived as a monk devoted to his ecclesiastical calling, yet at the same time he was an intellectual, cultural, and national struggler who carried Lebanon’s concerns in all his writings, research, and public positions. He refused to bow to the culture of fear or to appease those whose projects targeted the Lebanese entity and its historical identity.
He belonged to the generation that believed in Lebanon the Message—free, sovereign, and independent Lebanon; the Lebanon envisioned by Patriarch Elias Peter Hoayek, whose philosophy was articulated by Charles Malik and for which Bashir Gemayel and his righteous companions gave their lives. It is therefore no surprise that MP Nadim Gemayel described him today as “Bashir’s companion and a man of firm convictions,” for Abbot Naaman remained throughout his life faithful to the values of freedom, dignity, and sovereignty that Bashir Gemayel embraced and ultimately sacrificed his life to defend.
He wrote history rather than merely witnessing it. He preserved the Maronite and Lebanese memory from distortion and documented the pivotal chapters of our nation’s history, fully aware that nations which lose their memory also lose their future. In an era marked by compromise and surrender, Abbot Paul Naaman remained steadfast like one of the Cedars of the Lord—unchanging in his convictions, unwavering in principle, and uncompromising regarding the truth of Lebanon.
Today, as we bid him farewell, we feel that a great cedar of Lebanon has fallen. Yet its roots will remain deeply planted in the soil of the homeland, and his ideas, writings, and positions will continue to serve as guiding lights for future generations along the path of truth and freedom.
Yet our Christian faith knows no despair in the face of death, for death, to the believer, is not an end but a passage into eternal life.
The Holy Scriptures proclaim:“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”(Job 1:21)
And our Lord Jesus Christ says: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”(John 11:25)
And He adds: “Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.”
(John 11:26)
The Apostle Paul further comforts us with these words: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”(2 Timothy 4:7)
Indeed, Abbot Paul Naaman fought the good fight, completed his mission faithfully, and remained steadfast in his faith, his Lebanon, and his Church until his final breath.
May his soul rest in peace in the embrace of the Heavenly Father. May his memory remain eternal among the righteous, and may his national and spiritual legacy continue to inspire every Lebanese who believes in a free, sovereign, and independent Lebanon—a homeland of mission, holiness, and witness.
Glory to his soul, eternal rest to his pure spirit, and heartfelt condolences to his family—especially his nephew, Dr. Charles Chartouni—to his relatives, to the Lebanese Maronite Order, and to all Lebanese who, with his passing, have lost a great monk, an exceptional thinker, and one of the guardians of Lebanon’s historical identity.
