الأباتي بولس نعمان الذي عرفه اللبنانيون رئيسا للرهبنة المارونية اللبنانية ومؤرخا غاص في دراسة التاريخ وركز فيه على لبنان ونضال أهله لا بل رافقهم في مراحل حاسمة زمن الأحداث وساهم في الجمع بينهم بقدر الامكان، لم يكن شخصية بعيدة عن سنوات النضال التي عشناها، ولا ممن تنكّر خوفا أو رهبة لأهلنا في الجنوب يوم انقطعت الطرق بين المناطق وتغيرت التحالفات. وهو لم يقبل إلا أن يزرع ديرا بين عين إبل ورميش ليثبّت البشارة التي حملت اسمها هذه المنطقة في دير ومعهد كان في الأزمات منهلا للعلم وملجأ يوم المصاعب.
الأباتي نعمان كم رافقنا بالبحر والبر وتحمّل كما كل الجنوبيين نتائج الخيارات الخاطئة التي فصلت المناطق عن بعضها وأعادت أجواء القتال والعنف حتى بين أهل البيت الواحد. ولا أزال أذكره يوم أحداث مدرسة قمر وتبادل الأسرى بين القوات والجيش بعدها والذي تم في دير الرهبنة في الأشرفية وقد طلب حضوري شخصيا تلك العملية التي رايت فيها البعد الكبير بين القوتين اللتين يتكل عليهما لحماية المناطق الحرة في شرق بيروت وتلك النظرة اليائسة التي جرّحت إيمانه بالمستقبل وأفهمتني بأن الأمور تسير بعكس ما يجب أن تكون عليه.
الأباتي نعمان أيضا استمع لقصتي عن رفقا العينبلية في دير الرهبنة في حريصا في إحدى الأمسيات واستدعى الأب محفوظ يومها والذي كان كتب قصة القديسة. وبعد استماعه لما في التقليد العينإبلي عن رفقتنا أفهمني بأنني تأخرت. فربما كان هناك مجالا للبحث في هذا الاتجاه ولكن الموضوع حسم وكان جوابي بأن من فضلت الابتعاد عن الافتخار الدنيوي ربما لا تريدنا أن نخدش تواضعها أو نشوش على ارادة الله فيها.
الأباتي نعمان كان عرف القهر يوم اضطر إلى التفاوض بين عون وجعجع لتخليص المسيحيين من قتال الأخوة الذي أذلهم وقتل ابناءهم لينتهوا بتسليم المناطق التي حررتها الدماء الغالية في مواجهة المحتل الغاشم ثم عدنا لنسلمها له بدون قتال من أجل الحفاظ على ما تبقى بعد المعارك والجولات العنيفة بين الأخوة.
الأباتي نعمان تحمل الانكسار وقبل بالتواري لكي يركز على الصلاة والبحث بعيدا عن الأضواء. وهو اليوم يذهب لمقابلة ربه حاملا معه الكثير من الوزنات والمآسي ونتائج المحاولات التي قام بها وسوف يستمع منه تعالى إلى حكمه على الجهد والتجارب ولو فشلت ونحن نترجى أن يقبلها الرب ويستقبله في أحضان السيدة العذراء أم النور وسيدة البشارة التي أحبها وعمل من أجل أن تبقى تحمي جنوب لبنان كما هي مكرسة وذكرها مستمر في بقية المناطق اللبنانية.

Abbot Boulos Naaman, whom the Lebanese knew as the head of the Lebanese Maronite Order and as a historian who delved deep into the study of history, focusing on Lebanon and the struggle of its people – indeed accompanying them during decisive stages of the war events and contributing as much as possible to bringing them together – was not a personality distant from the years of struggle that we lived through, nor was he among those who disowned, out of fear or awe, our people in the South when roads between regions were cut and alliances changed. He insisted on planting a monastery between Ain Ebel and Rmeish to cement the Annunciation [Al-Bishara], whose name this region bears, in a monastery and institute that in times of crisis was a source of knowledge and a refuge in times of hardship.
How much Abbot Naaman accompanied us by sea and by land, and endured, like all Southerners, the consequences of the wrong choices that separated regions from one another and brought back an atmosphere of fighting and violence even within members of the same household. I still remember him on the day of the Qamar School incidents and the subsequent prisoner exchange between the Lebanese Forces and the Army, which took place in the Order’s monastery in Ashrafieh, and he had personally requested my presence. In that operation, I saw the great distance between the two forces relied upon to protect the free regions in East Beirut, and that desperate look that wounded his faith in the future and made me understand that things were going contrary to how they should be.
Abbot Naaman also listened to my story about Rafqa of Ain Ebel at the Order’s monastery in Harissa one evening, and he summoned Father Mahfouz that day, who had written the story of the saint. And after hearing what is in the Ain Ebeli tradition about our Rafqa, he made me understand that I was late. Perhaps there had been room for research in this direction, but the matter had been decided. And my answer was that she who preferred to distance herself from worldly boasting perhaps does not want us to scratch her humility or disturb God’s will in her.
Abbot Naaman knew oppression on the day he was forced to negotiate between Aoun and Geagea to save Christians from the fratricidal fighting that humiliated them and killed their sons, ending with handing over the regions that precious blood had liberated in the face of the brutal occupier, then we returned to hand them over to him without a fight in order to preserve what remained after the battles and violent rounds between brothers.
Abbot Naaman endured the heartbreak and accepted to withdraw into seclusion in order to focus on prayer and research away from the spotlight. And today he goes to meet his Lord carrying with him many talents and tragedies and the results of the attempts he made, and he will hear from Him Almighty His judgment on the effort and the trials even if they failed, and we hope that the Lord will accept them and receive him in the embrace of the Virgin Lady, Mother of Light and Our Lady of the Annunciation, whom he loved and worked so that she would continue to protect South Lebanon as she is consecrated and her memory continues in the rest of the Lebanese regions.
