قد تنتهي قصة أيّ راهب عاديّ، لكن قصة شربل الفعليّة بدأت فور موته على جبل عنايا. منذ الليلة الأولى، بهر نور ساطع ينبعث من قبر الحبيس أنظار الأهالي في البيوت المقابلة للدير. رئيس الدير الأب انطونيوس المشمشاني لم يصدّق في البداية، ثم جذب الكثيرين، مسيحيين ومسلمين شيعة تهافتوا من القرى المجاورة.
– أنا رأيته ثلاث مرات، قال يوسف بو سليمان.
– كلّما سهرنا عند جيراننا المقابل بيتهم للقبر، نرى هذا المشهد العجيب، أكّد جرجس عمونئيل ساسين.
– وسمعت من شركاء الدير، وأهل المزارع المقابلة للدير، أنه كان يظهر في الليل شهب نار خارجاً من القبر. أما أنا فلم أرَ شيئاً بذاتي، أوضح الأخ بطرس مشمش.
وفي روزنامة الدير كتب الرئيس:”انه في اليوم الرابع والعشرين من كانون الأول، سنة 1898، توفي لرحمته تعالى، الأب شربل بقاعكفرا الحبيس، بداء الفالج، وتزوّد بواجبات الموتى، ودفن في مقبرة الدير، وله من العمر 68 سنة، بزمان القس أنطونيوس مشمشاني، وما سيجريه بعد موته، يكفي عن الإسهاب بحسن سيرته، وبالأخص حفظ نذوره، حتى نقول: إن طاعته ملائكية لا بشرية”.
تدفق النور من مقبرة الأب شربل لفت مرة الشيخ محمود حماده وبعض رجاله الذين كانوا يطاردون بعض الأشقياء الفارين من وجه الحكومة. ففي ليلة ممطرة، لم يفلحوا في العودة إلى حجولا، فحوّلوا مسارهم بإتجاه الدير. وعندما أطلوا من بعيد لمحوا نوراً بدا اولاً ضئيلاً ثم شعّ ولمع كنور كوكب قرب باب الدير شرقي الكنيسة.
ظنّ الشيخ حماده ان الرعاع مختبئون في تلك الانحاء، فأسرع إلى هناك لإلقاء القبض عليهم، الا انه فور وصوله إلى الدير إختفى النور. سرعان ما قرعوا باب الدير. فأجابهم الأخ بطرس ميفوق:
– البوابة مقفلة والساعة متأخرة والرهبان نيام. ليس وقت ضيافة.
فردّ الشيخ حماده:
– إفتح لنا، ومتى عرفتنا لا تشارعنا.
ما ان فتح لهم حتى رأى خسمة انفار يرافقون الشيخ حماده الذي بادره:
– لماذا لم تفتحوا لنا حالاً؟
ردّ الأخ وهو في حالة من النعس الشديد:
– لأننا كنا نياماً.
– كيف أنتم نيام؟ وأنا مع أنفاري شاهدت النور من الجهة الشرقية، قرب البوّابة مرّات يظهر ويغيب.
استفاق الرهبان الآخرين وقالوا له:
– عندنا، حيث رأيت النور، قبر مدفون فيه حبيس هو الأب شربل. والشركاء وغيرهم رأوا نوراً فوق القبر في بعض الليالي.
فأجابهم الشيخ محمود:
– والله! بأول فرصة تصحّ لي سأخبر البطريرك بهذه المسألة وأنشرها في الجرائد، فإنّي قد عرفت، بموت مطارين وبطاركة، ومررت بقبور كثيرين، وما شاهدت مثل هذا المشهد الذي أبهر أعيننا.
وبالفعل، سطّر الشيخ محمود حماده محضراً بما شاهد وأرسله إلى غبطة البطريرك الياس الحويك. وتحقّق ان النور لم يكن منبعثاً من قنديل أو نار أشعلت بل كان صادراً من قبر الأب شربل.
فمن عرف بالاختبار الشخصي ان يسوع هو نور بمعنى اسمى وأعمق من الشبه القائم بين النور الذي يبهر الأنظار وذاك الذي تستنير به النفوس، لن يكون مستغرباً أن يصدر عن قبر الأب شربل مخلوف انواراً باهرة تستدعي انتباه المئات في بداية القرن العشرين قبل أن تبهر الملايين في آخر القرن.

From the very first night, a brilliant light emanating from the hermit’s tomb dazzled the eyes of the residents in the houses opposite the monastery. The abbot, Father Antonios Al-Mishmishani, initially refused to believe it, but it attracted many, both Christians and Shiite Muslims, who flocked from the surrounding villages.
“I saw it three times,” said Youssef Bou Sleiman.
“Whenever we stay up late at our neighbors’ house opposite the tomb, we see this wondrous sight,” confirmed Georges Emmanuel Sassin.
“And I heard from the monastery’s partners and the people of the farms opposite the monastery that a fireball would appear at night coming out of the tomb. As for me, I didn’t see anything myself,” explained Brother Boutros Mishmish. In the monastery’s calendar, the abbot wrote: “On the twenty-fourth day of December, 1898, Father Charbel Bkaakafra, the hermit, passed away from a stroke. He was given the rites for the dead and buried in the monastery cemetery at the age of 68, during the time of Father Antonios Mishmishani. His conduct after his death speaks volumes about his virtuous life, especially his obedience to his vows, to the point that we can say his obedience was angelic, not human.”
A light emanating from Father Charbel’s grave once caught the attention of Sheikh Mahmoud Hamadeh and some of his men, who were pursuing fugitives fleeing the authorities. One rainy night, unable to return to Hjoula, they changed course towards the monastery. Looking out from afar, they glimpsed a light that appeared faint at first, then shone brightly like a star near the monastery gate, east of the church.
Sheikh Hamadeh thought the rabble were hiding in that area, so he hurried there to arrest them. However, as soon as he reached the monastery, the light disappeared. They quickly knocked on the monastery door. Brother Boutros Mefouq answered them:
“The gate is locked, it’s late, and the monks are asleep. It’s not a time for hospitality.”
Sheikh Hamadeh replied:
“Open for us, and when you recognize us, don’t argue with us.”
As soon as he opened the door, he saw five men accompanying Sheikh Hamadeh, who immediately asked him:
“Why didn’t you open for us right away?”
The brother, still very sleepy, replied:
“Because we were asleep.”
“How could you be asleep? My men and I saw the light from the eastern side, near the gate, appearing and disappearing several times.”
The other monks awoke and told him: “At the place where you saw the light, there is a tomb where a hermit, Father Charbel, is buried. The fellow monks and others have seen a light above the tomb on some nights.” Sheikh Mahmoud replied, “By God! At the first opportunity, I will inform the Patriarch of this matter and publish it in the newspapers. I have witnessed the deaths of many bishops and patriarchs, and I have passed by the graves of many, yet I have never seen anything like this sight that has dazzled our eyes.”
Indeed, Sheikh Mahmoud Hamadeh wrote a report of what he had seen and sent it to His Beatitude Patriarch Elias Hoyek. It was confirmed that the light did not emanate from a lamp or a fire, but rather from the grave of Father Charbel. For anyone who knows through personal experience that Jesus is light in a higher and deeper sense than the light that dazzles the eyes and that which enlightens the soul, it will not be surprising that brilliant lights should emanate from the grave of Father Charbel Makhlouf, attracting the attention of hundreds at the beginning of the twentieth century before captivating millions at the end of the century.
