أين الكنيسة؟

في خضمّ الضائقة المعيشية الخانقة التي تتخبّط فيها العائلات الوسطى والفقيرة، والتي تساهم في الهجرة الجماعية وإفراغ لبنان من شبابه… إلخ.
الكل يسأل: أين الكنيسة من هذه الأزمة المتفاقمة، التي تهدّد الوطن والكيان بأوخم العواقب؟ ولماذا تتقاعس عن إغاثة شعبها في حاجاته الحياتية، والأقساط المدرسية التي تكوي جيوب الأهالي، وغيرها وغيرها؟
وهل من حاجة إلى تذكير رعاة الكنيسة بتوصيات المسيح بأعمال الرحمة وإغاثة الفقراء… إلخ، أم بقوله الشهير: «لا يقدر أحدٌ أن يخدم سيدين، الله والمال…» متّى ٦، ٢٤.
الخلاصة، ربما سها عن بال هؤلاء الرعاة أن استمرار الهجرة الجماعية سيؤول، لا سمح الله، إلى تفريغ البلاد، وتحويل الكنيسة إلى رعاةٍ بلا رعية… وتذكّروا بطاركة قنّوبين الذين قيل عنهم: «قلوبهم من ذهب، وعصيّهم من خشب».

Where Is the Church?

Amidst the stifling economic hardship in which middle-class and poor families are struggling—hardship that fuels mass emigration and drains Lebanon of its youth, among other consequences…
Everyone is asking: Where does the Church stand regarding this escalating crisis, which threatens the nation and its very existence with dire consequences? Why does it fail to come to the aid of its people regarding their essential needs, the school tuition fees that are draining parents’ pockets, and so much more?
Is there any need to remind the Church’s shepherds of Christ’s teachings on acts of mercy and aiding the poor, or of His famous words: “No one can serve two masters: God and money…” (Matthew 6:24)?
In short, perhaps these shepherds have overlooked the fact that continued mass emigration will—God forbid—lead to the emptying of the country, leaving the Church with shepherds but no flock. Let them recall the Patriarchs of Qannoubine, of whom it was said: “Their hearts were of gold, but their staffs were of wood.”
