Rubio’s Right About Threat Of Leftist Violence Amb. Alberto M. Fernandez/MEMRI/July 21/2026
The reaction was as tired as it was predictable. When it was known that the State Department would hold a July 2026 conference of government ministers from over 60 countries on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism (meaning leftist political violence) the usual suspects in the media and academia expressed skepticism about the idea. Some of the derision was due to general dislike of the Administration, some of it was the concept. The critics had said much the same thing when the Trump Administration unveiled its counterterrorism strategy in May 2026, which included “violent left-wing extremists” as a particular area of concern.[1] And yet even liberal publications highlighted, reluctantly, in 2025 that “left-wing terrorism is on the rise.”[2]
This should come as no surprise. We could well be on the cusp of a great third wave of left-wing terrorism flowing naturally from a rise wave of left-wing (or far-left) activism and agitation. First of all, the terror of the left never actually disappeared. Depending on definitions, one might say that the first “modern” type of terrorism was left-wing, the bomb throwing, often anarchist, assassins of the late 19th and early 20th century. They were the first Antifa – even before there was something called “fascism” to be against – immortalized in Joseph Conrad’s great novel The Secret Agent.
The 20th century saw the emergence of organized Red Terror as communist regimes from Moscow to Havana to Addis Ababa and Phnom Penh waged bloody campaigns of political violence against their internal enemies. Two million people died in the Chinese “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution” alone, which lasted only a few years. Two million others died in the Soviet Gulag. And the domestic Red Terror of many of these regimes spilled over internationally as they became the patrons, bankers, and promoters of leftist revolution worldwide.
If the first wave of leftist terror was that of leftist regimes, the second broke out in the late 20th century. The activism and agitation, much of it idealistic, of the young would be transformed into direct action, political or revolutionary violence. Red Brigades, Baader-Meinhof, Shining Path, Weather Underground, we all know the names. As Bryan Burroughs notes in his famed book on revolutionary violence in the United States during the period, these radicals “mistakenly believed the country was on the brink of genuine political revolution, who thought that violence would speed the change.”
Those bloody years of American leftist political violence were matched by similar movements in Western Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. These homegrown groups cross-fertilized – German leftists would commit terror for the sake of Palestine, Japanese terrorists would be trained in Lebanon – and also were abetted by regimes, by Fidel Castro and Qaddafi, by the KGB and the East German Stasi.
The leftist revolutionaries of the 1970s, those that survived, became the academics and activists of the 80s and 90s. Bill Ayers, the former Weather Underground terrorist who co-wrote Prairie Fire: the Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism in 1974 (dedicated to, among many others, to Sirhan Sirhan, the Palestinian assassin of Senator Robert F. Kennedy),[3] would have some sort of a relationship – how close was a matter of controversy in 2008 – with young activist Barrack Obama.
That the youth revolt of 1968, and campus ferment against the Vietnam War, had something to do with the subsequent revolutionary violence is not in doubt. How much and why is something that can be debated but the connection was there.
It is not inconceivable that the widespread protests and politics in the West triggered by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent events can also lead to radical violence as it has already led to radical politics. Most of those who marched in the 60s against the Vietnam War did not become actual terrorists, but a few did. As Secretary Rubio noted, “here in the United States, the share of left-wing terrorist attacks and plots has risen to levels not seen in decades.”[4]
MEMRI began the Violent Extremist Threat Monitor (VETM) years ago to document and analyze rhetoric and threats issuing from far-left and far-right extremists.[5] We are seeing today the same cross pollination and political trends that were observed in earlier outbreaks of extremist violence. The recent funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei underscored this type of overlapping appeal as American “leftists” Jackson Hinkle, Chris Helali, and Calla Walsh attended in order to support the struggle of Islamic Iran against the United States.[6]
Hinkle and Helali are leaders of the so-called American Communist Party.[7] Walsh’s path took her from liberal Democratic politics to support for the Castro regime in Cuba to pro-Palestine political activism (and vandalism) to Iran.[8] The same Islamic Iran which once killed thousands of local communists is today hailed as a leader in the anti-American and anti-West front, which, of course, is true.[9]
While it is easy to dismiss the rhetoric of the Hinkles and Walshes as marginal, the much more mainstream Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a rising power within American politics and in certain urban sectors of the Democratic Party, poses both as merely a Scandinavian-style social democratic movement and indulges in what seems to be much more extreme discourse.[10] To paraphrase Mao, the potential sea for the revolutionary of today to swim in is getting bigger.[11]
Burroughs’ 2015 book Days of Rage begins with the tale of the first bomber to “take anti-government violence to the next level, building large bombs and using them to attack symbols of American power” a man named Sam Melville (born Samuel Grossman). Even then there was an international dimension as there is today.[12] Melville was helped in his quest by Cuban-supported Canadian terrorists of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ). Burroughs also shows in his book how law enforcement was caught basically unaware by the explosion of leftist violence in the 70s even though all the warning signs were there.
We are fortunate that the U.S. government is this time taking the flashing warning signs seriously. There are certainly plenty of them.[13] The terror is already happening.[14] Working with allies worldwide to “disrupt, identify, defund, debank, arrest and prosecute” far-left violent extremists, now rather than later, is the smart, prudent path to take.
