Statement of condemnation and condolence on the martyrdom of Edgar Jallou from Ain Ebel, and denunciation of the Lebanese state’s neglect of the suffering of the border Christian villages
Elias Bejjani/October 12/ 2026
With hearts wrung by pain and anger, we extend our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathy to the family of the martyr Edgar Jallou, son of the steadfast southern town of Ain Ebel, and member of the Internal Security Forces, who was martyred this morning as a result of the explosion of a suspicious object from war remnants, while working in an agricultural field on the outskirts of his town.
While we condemn this painful incident that claimed Edgar’s life, we pray to the Lord God to encompass his soul with His vast mercy, to grant him dwelling in the heavenly abodes alongside the righteous and the saints, and to comfort the hearts of his parents, family members, relatives, the people of his town Ain Ebel, and all his loved ones, and grant them patience, strength, and hope in this painful tragedy.
But the duty of condolence does not exempt us from the duty of telling the truth, and human pain must not obscure the magnitude of the tragedy that our Christian villages and towns in southern Lebanon are living through. The martyrdom of Edgar Jallou is not merely an isolated painful incident, but a new reminder of the heavy price paid by the people of the South, especially the residents of the Christian border villages, as a result of successive wars, their deadly remnants, and the absence of an effective state that is supposed to protect citizens and secure for them the minimum requirements of life, security, and dignity.
Steadfast Christian villages left to their fate
We salute with pride and honor our steadfast Christian people in Ain Ebel, Rmeish, Debel, Al-Qouzah, Yaroun, and all the border villages and towns whose sons cling to their land, homes, and churches, and refuse to become victims of displacement or to be uprooted from their historical and national roots. These Lebanese are not numbers in news bulletins, nor groups left to their fate on the margins of the homeland. They are rightful owners of their land, and honorable Lebanese citizens, facing harsh living and security conditions, struggling daily to secure their basic needs of food, medicine, fuel, water, electricity, and essential materials for the continuation of life.
The steadfastness of these villages is not a political slogan, but a daily battle for survival. Their people face security risks, deadly war remnants, difficulty of movement, high cost of living, and inability to secure some vital needs regularly. Nevertheless, they insist on remaining in the land of their fathers and ancestors, in preservation of their identity, dignity, and right to a free and secure life. Hence, we direct an explicit condemnation to the Lebanese state, which bears direct constitutional and national responsibility for protecting these citizens, securing their needs, and ensuring the safe arrival of supplies to them. Leaving the border villages to face their fate, without a sustainable relief and protection plan, and without providing the elements of steadfastness, is a grave failure that cannot be justified by circumstances or security pretexts. A state that fails to protect its citizens, to secure their most basic life requirements, and to guarantee their freedom of movement and dignity, loses an essential part of its raison d’être and its sovereign function.
We condemn the harassment and humiliation of residents at checkpoints
Even more condemnable and dangerous is what the sons of these villages are subjected to, according to circulating testimonies and reports, of harassment, insults, and humiliations at some security and military checkpoints by elements of the terrorist and criminal Hezbollah while they travel in convoys to secure food and supply materials and other necessary essentials for their towns, whether on the way there or back. We strongly condemn any targeting of citizens or insulting them or unjustified obstruction of their movement, and we call on the leadership of the Army and the Internal Security Forces and the competent official authorities to investigate these complaints, determine responsibilities, and hold accountable anyone proven to be involved in violations or abuses, regardless of the party to which he belongs.
Hezbollah, with what it represents as a military, security, and political force outside the authority of the state, and with what its weapons impose as a reality parallel to Lebanese legitimacy, bears serious political and national responsibility for plunging Lebanon into futile wars, serving the calculations of the Iranian regime and its expansionist and sectarian project in the region. The Lebanese have paid, and continue to pay, heavy prices as a result of war and peace decisions that were not taken within constitutional institutions, and as a result of turning Lebanese lands into an arena for settling regional scores and implementing agendas that go beyond the Lebanese national interest.
As for the South, which should have been a space of security, development, and prosperity for its sons, it has turned into an open arena for conflicts, while the border villages, including Christian villages, bear the burdens of displacement, fear, destruction, disruption of economic and social life, and face the risk of losing the elements of survival on their land. We condemn the project of hegemony, imbalance, and terrorism practiced by Hezbollah, and we refuse to subject southern Lebanon to a military and partisan will linked to an Iranian decision, just as we refuse for the sons of the border villages to pay the price of policies they did not choose, wars they did not decide to wage, and projects that do not serve Lebanon’s sovereignty nor the interests of its people.
This, and a sovereign, free, and independent state cannot be built in the presence of weapons outside its legitimate institutions, or in light of the ability of any party to impose its military and political choices on the Lebanese, and to endanger their security and future. The true defense of the South is not by turning it into a permanent front for the merchants of the lie of liberation and resistance, nor by exposing its residents to the dangers of wars, but by restoring consideration to the Lebanese state, extending its exclusive authority over all its territories, protecting borders and citizens, and securing the conditions for a dignified life for all sons of the region, Christians and Muslims, without discrimination or selectivity.
We call on the state and the international community to assume their responsibilities
Based on these facts and risks, we demand the following:
Ensuring effective protection for border villages: Establishing a clear national emergency plan that guarantees the provision of food, medicine, fuel, water, and other basic needs, in a regular and safe manner.
Guaranteeing freedom of movement and dignity of citizens: Protecting the convoys of residents who move to secure life necessities, preventing any harassment, insults, or illegal obstruction, and investigating every serious complaint and holding those responsible accountable.
Removing deadly war remnants: Intensifying operations to detect suspicious objects, mines, and unexploded ordnance, clearing agricultural lands and residential areas, and educating residents about the dangers, to prevent the recurrence of tragedies like the one that claimed the life of Edgar Jallou.
Securing urgent humanitarian and economic support: Assisting families who cling to their land despite harsh conditions, supporting health, social institutions and municipalities, and securing the requirements for continued steadfastness, away from favoritism and political bickering.
Restoring the state’s sovereignty over the South: Taking serious steps to confine weapons to the legitimate military and security institutions, and ending any military or security authority parallel to the state’s authority, ensuring the protection of citizens and the unity of the country and independence of its decision.
Calling on the international community to take effective action: Calling on the United Nations and states concerned with Lebanon to pressure to end Hezbollah’s armed hegemony, and to help the Lebanese state dismantle its illegitimate military and security structure, and ensure its institutions and activities are subject to law, investigate violations and crimes proven by evidence, hold those responsible accountable before the competent judiciary, and take necessary legal measures regarding funds and properties linked to illicit activities, in accordance with applicable laws and judicial guarantees.
Restoring consideration for the citizen and his rights: Emphasizing that the sons of the Christian border villages are not second-class citizens, and that their right to remain in their land safely and with dignity, and to obtain basic services, is a national and human right that must not be subjected to political or military bargaining.
Edgar Jallou is a martyr of his land, and the villages of the South are a trust on the neck of the state
The martyrdom of Edgar Jallou, son of Ain Ebel and member of the Internal Security Forces, brings back to the forefront the tragedy of the people of the South who live between the remnants of wars and their dangers, and between the failure of the state and the repercussions of conflicts imposed on their regions.
We pray for mercy for Edgar, and we again extend our deepest condolences to his family and the people of Ain Ebel and all the southern villages, asking the Lord God to grant the martyr eternal rest, and to make him dwell in the heavenly abodes alongside the righteous and saints, and to comfort the hearts of his loved ones and grant them patience and hope. And we stand with our steadfast people in the Christian border villages, salute their attachment to their land, faith, and dignity, and affirm that their steadfastness is not their responsibility alone, but the responsibility of the Lebanese state first, and the responsibility of all national forces keen on Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence, and the responsibility of the international community which must not be content with statements of concern while the elements of life in these towns are eroding. Protecting Christian villages in the South is not a sectarian issue, but an issue of sovereignty, justice, citizenship, and the right to life. And Lebanon will not have a secure future as long as its sons are hostages to illegitimate weapons, as long as the state retreats before the authority of fait accompli, and as long as the border villages are left alone facing danger and deprivation.
Mercy for martyr Edgar Jallou, condolences to his family and the people of Ain Ebel, salutations to all steadfast southerners, and glory to a sovereign, free, and independent Lebanon, one state for all its sons, not an arena for the projects of others nor hostage to any weapon outside legitimacy.
