“أنا هو القيامة والحياة. من آمن بي ولو مات فسيحيا” (يوحنا 11: 25)
بقلوب مؤمنة بقضاء الله ورجاء القيامة، نودّع اليوم قامة وطنية وسيادية كبيرة، وننعى الرئيس الفخري لحزب الوطنيين الأحرار، والنائب والوزير السابق، ورئيس بلدية دير القمر الأسبق، الرئيس دوري كميل شمعون، الذي انتقل إلى بيت الآب السماوي بعد مسيرة طويلة من النضال الوطني والالتزام بالقضية اللبنانية.
وُلِد الراحل الكبير في دير القمر عام 1931، ونشأ في بيت وطني عريق، فهو نجل الرئيس اللبناني الراحل كميل نمر شمعون، أحد أبرز رجالات الاستقلال وبناة الدولة اللبنانية الحديثة، ووالدته السيدة زلفا شمعون. حمل منذ شبابه إرث العائلة الوطني والسيادي، وظلّ أميناً له حتى آخر يوم من حياته.
كان الرئيس دوري شمعون واحداً من أعمدة المدرسة الشمعونية الوطنية، ومن المؤسسين الفاعلين لمسيرة حزب الوطنيين الأحرار إلى جانب والده الرئيس كميل شمعون وشقيقه الشهيد داني شمعون. وبعد استشهاد شقيقه، حمل الأمانة السياسية والحزبية في ظروف بالغة الصعوبة، فقاد الحزب محافظاً على ثوابته التاريخية القائمة على الحرية والسيادة والاستقلال والديمقراطية.
تميّز الراحل بمواقفه الوطنية الواضحة التي لم تعرف المساومة أو التردد. عارض الاحتلال الفلسطيني للبنان عندما كان كثيرون يلتزمون الصمت، وواجه الوصاية السورية بشجاعة وثبات، كما كان من أوائل الأصوات التي ناهضت المشروع الإيراني وأذرعه المسلحة في لبنان، مؤمناً بأن الدولة الواحدة والسلاح الشرعي الواحد هما الأساس لأي وطن حر وسيد ومستقل.
شارك بفعالية في مسيرة ثورة الأرز وتجمع 14 آذار، وبقي حتى سنواته الأخيرة صوتاً سيادياً حراً يدافع عن لبنان الرسالة، لبنان التعددية والعيش المشترك والحرية. لم يتبدل ولم يساوم ولم يساير، بل بقي وفياً للمبادئ التي تربّى عليها، مؤمناً بأن الحق لا يُقاس بعدد مؤيديه بل بعدالة قضيته.
شغل منصب رئيس بلدية دير القمر بين عامي 1998 و2008، حيث عمل بإخلاص على خدمة بلدته التاريخية والحفاظ على تراثها العريق. كما انتُخب نائباً عن قضاء الشوف في البرلمان اللبناني، حاملاً هموم منطقته ووطنه إلى المجلس النيابي، ومدافعاً عن السيادة والاستقلال والدستور.
وكان الراحل زوجاً وأباً محباً، ترك عائلة كريمة تابعت مسيرته الوطنية، وفي مقدمتها نجله كميل دوري شمعون الذي يتولى اليوم رئاسة حزب الوطنيين الأحرار ويمثل الحزب في الحياة السياسية اللبنانية، حاملاً الشعلة التي تناقلتها الأجيال في هذه العائلة الوطنية العريقة.
لقد شاءت الأقدار أن يرحل الرئيس دوري شمعون في ذكرى استشهاد الرئيس المنتخب بشير الجميّل، وكأن التاريخ أراد أن يجمع مجدداً بين رجال السيادة الذين التقوا على حلم لبنان الحر السيد المستقل، لبنان الذي دفعوا من أجله أثماناً باهظة من التضحيات والصمود.
برحيل دوري شمعون يطوي لبنان صفحة من صفحات جيل الرجال الذين واجهوا العواصف وتمسكوا بثوابتهم. إلا أن الإرث الذي تركه سيبقى حياً في ذاكرة الأحرار، وفي ضمير كل لبناني يؤمن بلبنان الوطن النهائي الحر السيد المستقل.
يقول الكتاب المقدس: “جاهدت الجهاد الحسن، أكملت السعي، حفظت الإيمان” (2 تيموثاوس 4: 7).
نعم، لقد جاهد الرئيس دوري شمعون الجهاد الحسن، وأكمل سعيه الوطني بإيمان وثبات، وحفظ الأمانة التي ورثها عن والده وعن رجالات الاستقلال.
نسأل الرب الإله أن يسكنه في مساكن الأبرار والصديقين، وأن يمنح عائلته ومحبيه وحزب الوطنيين الأحرار ورفاق دربه نعمة العزاء والرجاء.
الراحة الأبدية أعطه يا رب، والنور الدائم فليشرق عليه، ولتكن نفسه مع نفوس الأبرار والصديقين في ملكوت السماوات. آمين.

With hearts filled with faith in God’s will and hope in the Resurrection, we bid farewell today to a distinguished national and sovereign figure. We mourn the passing of Dory Camille Chamoun, Honorary President of the National Liberal Party, former Member of Parliament, former Minister, and former Mayor of Deir el-Qamar, who has departed to the House of the Heavenly Father after a long life of national struggle and unwavering commitment to the Lebanese cause.
Born in Deir el-Qamar in 1931, Dory Chamoun was raised in a household deeply rooted in patriotism and public service. He was the son of Lebanon’s late President Camille Nimr Chamoun, one of the foremost leaders of Lebanese independence and statehood, and of Mrs. Zelpha Chamoun. From an early age, he embraced his family’s national legacy and remained faithful to it throughout his life.
Dory Chamoun was one of the pillars of the Chamoun political school and among the principal figures who helped shape the journey of the National Liberal Party, alongside his father, President Camille Chamoun, and his brother, the late Dany Chamoun. Following his brother’s assassination, he assumed the party’s leadership during exceptionally difficult times, preserving its historic principles of freedom, sovereignty, independence, and democracy.
The late leader was known for his clear and steadfast national positions, never compromising or wavering. He opposed the Palestinian armed presence and occupation of Lebanon when many remained silent, courageously confronted Syrian tutelage and domination, and later became one of the earliest and most consistent voices opposing the Iranian project and its armed proxies in Lebanon. He firmly believed that a single state and a single legitimate military authority are indispensable foundations for a free, sovereign, and independent Lebanon.
He played an active role in the Cedar Revolution and the March 14 Alliance, remaining until his final years a sovereign voice defending Lebanon’s unique mission of pluralism, coexistence, freedom, and independence. He neither changed his convictions nor yielded to political expediency. Instead, he remained loyal to the principles upon which he was raised, convinced that truth is measured not by the number of its supporters but by the justice of its cause.
From 1998 to 2008, he served as Mayor of Deir el-Qamar, working diligently to preserve the town’s rich historical heritage and to advance its development. He later served as a Member of Parliament representing the Chouf District, carrying the concerns of his constituents and his nation to the Lebanese Parliament while consistently defending sovereignty, independence, and constitutional legitimacy.
Dory Chamoun was also a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind a respected family that continues his national legacy, foremost among them his son Camille Dory Chamoun, who today serves as President of the National Liberal Party and represents its political tradition in Lebanon, carrying forward the torch passed down through generations of this distinguished patriotic family.
Providence willed that Dory Chamoun depart this world on the anniversary of the martyrdom of President-elect Bashir Gemayel, as though history wished once more to unite men of sovereignty who shared the dream of a free, sovereign, and independent Lebanon—a dream for which they paid a heavy price through sacrifice, perseverance, and steadfastness.
With Dory Chamoun’s passing, Lebanon closes a chapter in the history of a generation of leaders who stood firm in the face of adversity and remained faithful to their convictions. Yet the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live on in the memory of free men and women and in the conscience of every Lebanese who believes in Lebanon as the final homeland, free, sovereign, and independent.
As Holy Scripture says:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Indeed, Dory Chamoun fought the good fight, completed his national mission with faith and steadfastness, and preserved the trust he inherited from his father and from the generation of Lebanon’s independence leaders.
May Almighty God receive him into the dwellings of the righteous and the just, and may He grant comfort and hope to his family, loved ones, the National Liberal Party, and all those who walked beside him in the struggle for a free Lebanon.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the righteous, rest in the peace of God’s heavenly kingdom. Amen.
