قال السيد فضل الله في الفيديو المرفق وهو من الأرشيف ما يلي: إننا نخاف من الناس أن يفكروا، نحن اللذين نعتبر أنفسنا خطئاً أو صواباً في مواقع القيادة، وفي مواقع المسؤولية، في الدين والسياسة والإجتماع. نحن نخاف من الناس أن يفكروا وقد عملنا ونعمل على ان يكون هناك شعب يصفق، وشعب يهتف، وأن يكون هناك شعب ينافق. علمنا الشعب النفاق لأنه إن لم ينافق معنا سوف يفقد كثيراً من الإمتيازات عندنا. وأن لم ينافق معنا سوف يفقد وظيفة أو موقع أو إلى ما ذلك. أصبحنا لأننا نخاف من الحقيقة أن تتحدانا وأن تبعدنا عن مواقعنا، أصبحنا نخاف من النقد، وأصبح النقد عندنا عداوة. ممنوع أن تنقد، وممنوع أن تحلل خطاً سياسياً أو خطاً إجتماعياً. ممنوع ان تبدع فكراً جديداً. إن الكثيرين من اللذين يحيطون بك في الواقع ينطلقون من موقع تخلف ذهني ليكفروا فكرة هنا وليضللوا فكرة هناك، وليخونوا انساناً هنا،وليقمعوا كلمة هناك. القمع ليس من الضروري أن يكون قمع السلاح، ولكن قمع الواقع هو الذي يمنع المفكر أن ينطلق بالحرية.

(Free translation from Arabic by: Elias Bejjani) In the attached archival video, Sayyid Fadlallah stated the following: “We are afraid of people thinking—we, who consider ourselves, rightly or wrongly, to be in positions of leadership and responsibility in religion, politics, and society. We fear people thinking; we have worked, and continue to work, toward creating a public that merely applauds, cheers, and hypocritically flatters. We taught the people hypocrisy because if they do not practice it with us, they will lose many of the privileges we provide. If they do not flatter us, they may lose a job, a position, or similar opportunities. Because we fear the truth might challenge us or remove us from our positions, we have become afraid of criticism. To us, criticism has become synonymous with enmity. It is forbidden to criticize. It is forbidden to analyze a political or social path. It is forbidden to innovate or produce new thought. Many of those who surround you in reality operate from a position of mental backwardness; they brand one idea as heresy here, label another as misleading there, accuse a person of treason here, and suppress a word there. Suppression does not necessarily have to be the suppression of arms; rather, it is the suppression of reality that prevents the thinker from moving forward with freedom.”
