Canada Deplores Boko Haram’s Cowardly Acts
November 1, 2014 – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada was disgusted to hear reports that girls kidnapped by Boko Haram have been forced into marriage.
“There is no more cowardly and pathetic crime than preying on young girls and children.
“Canada calls on Nigerian authorities to redouble their efforts and bring this nightmare to an end, and bring those responsible to justice.
“Canada has made combatting child, early and forced marriage a priority, and reports like these will only strengthen our resolve to combat these acts in particular and terrorism in general.”

The leader of Nigeria’s Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has denied agreeing to any ceasefire with the government and said more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls all have converted to Islam and been married off. “The issue of the girls is long forgotten because I have long ago married them off,” he said, laughing. “In this war, there is no going back,” he said in the video received by The Associated Press in the same way as previous messages. ‘In this war, there is no going back.’ Nigeria’s chief of defence staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, on Oct. 17 announced that Boko Haram had agreed to an immediate ceasefire to end a five-year insurgency that has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes in northeast Nigeria. But attacks and abductions have continued with the extremists this week seizing Mubi, a town of more than 200,000 people. Fighting also continued Friday in Vimtin, the nearby village where Badeh was born. Shekau in August announced that Boko Haram wanted to establish an Islamic caliphate, along the lines of the ISIS group in Syria and Iraq, and fleeing residents have reported that hundreds of people are being detained for infractions of the extremists’ version of strict Shariah law in several towns and villages under their control. Boko Haram’s kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls writing exams at a boarding school in the remote northeastern town of Chibok in April prompted an international campaign for their release and criticism of Nigeria’s government for not acting quickly to free them. Dozens of the girls escaped on their own in the first couple of days, but 219 remain missing.

أبوجا – رويترز, أ ف ب: 01/11/14/أعلن زعيم جماعة “بوكو حرام” أبو بكر شيكاو أن جماعته زوجت نحو 219 فتاة خطفن قبل ستة أشهر لمقاتليها, ما يتناقض مع مزاعم الحكومة النيجيرية بقرب الإفراج عنهن. وقال الرجل في شريط فيديو بث على مواقع متشددة مساء أول من أمس, إن التلميذات ال¯219 اللواتي خطفن من مدرستهن في شيبوك بشمال شرق نيجيريا اعتنق جميعهن الإسلام وتم تزويجهن, مضيفاً “إما أن يقبل أباؤهن وأمهاتهن ذلك ويعتنقوا الإسلام أو يموتوا”, علماً أن معظم الفتيات المخطوفات مسيحيات. وكشف أن الجماعة تحتجز رهينة ألمانياً خطف في 16 يوليو الماضي بولاية أداماوا في شمال شرق نيجيريا. ونفى أي وقف لإطلاق النار مع السلطات النيجيرية, واصفاً إعلان حكومة أبوجا بوجود مفاوضات بأنه “أكاذيب”. ويثير حديث شيكاو شكوكاً بشأن النفوذ الحقيقي لدنلادي أحمدو الذي تتفاوض معه الحكومة النيجيرية على أنه متحدث عن “بوكوحرام” في تشاد. وكان الجيش والرئاسة النيجيريان أعلنا في منتصف أكتوبر الماضي التوصل إلى وقف لاطلاق النار مع “بوكو حرام” يلحظ خصوصاً الافراج عن التلميذات المخطوفات. لكن المواجهات لم تتوقف منذ ذلك الإعلان حتى أن عمليات خطف جديدة حصلت الأسبوع الماضي في شمال شرق نيجيريا الذي يشكل معقلاً للتمرد الذي أسفر عن سقوط 10 آلاف قتيل في الأعوام الخمسة الأخيرة. ومنذ البداية, تم التعامل مع إعلان وقف النار بحذر شديد خصوصاً أن “بوكو حرام” تمثلت في المفاوضات التي أدت إليه بشخص يجهله الجميع يدعى دنلادي أحمدو. ولم يتوافر أي عنصر يسمح بتحديد مكان تصوير الشريط أو تاريخه, الذي بدا فيه شيكاو مرتدياً الزي العسكري مع شريط أسود يلف جبهته تحوطه أربع شاحنات عسكرية مزودة مدافع مضادة للطائرات و15 مقاتلاً مسلحاً. وهي المرة الأولى منذ نحو خمسة أشهر التي يتحدث فيها شيكاو عن مصير التلميذات اللواتي خطفن في شيبوك في 14 أبريل الماضي, بعد أن أعلن الجيش النيجيري مقتله مرات عدة.
