عقدت كتل المعارضة وعدد من النواب المستقلين والتغييريين مؤتمرا صحافيا، مساء اليوم في دارة النائب ميشال معوض في بعبدا، وذلك نتيجة التواصل خلال آخر 24 ساعة بين المعارضة وبعض النواب المستقلين والتغييريين و”التيار الوطني الحر”، وتم التوافق على تنسيق الخطوات واعلان موقف في موضوع التقاطع على اسم مرشح لرئاسة الجمهورية.

وقال النائب ميشال معوض: “عندما قدمت ترشيحي الى رئاسة الجمهورية اللبنانية، قدمت مشروع حل لكل اللبنانيين بغض النظر عن انتماءاتهم السياسية او الطائفية او المناطقية، لان الذل الذي يعيشه اللبنانيون لا يفرق بين منطقة واخرى. قدمت مشروعا متكاملا لانني كنت مقتنعا وما زلت، انه لا يوجد حل للبنان لا جزئي ولا بالترقيع. قدمت حلا على اسس استرجاع الدولة والحقوق والسيادة واسترجاع علاقات لبنان العربية والدولية، والتي تشكل ضمانة اساسية لشبكة امان اقتصادية. وكنت واعيا للصعوبات التي سأواجهها”.
أضاف: “انطلاقا من واقع نعيشه جميعنا، والذي ولسوء الحظ، فان شروط الوصول الى الرئاسة تتناقض مع مواصفات النجاح، والذي حدث من وقتها، من جهة قوى الممانعة اصرت ان ترفض اليد الممدودة، وطبعا هذا كنا نتوقعه، واصرت ان تكمل في مشروع الهيمنة على حساب لبنان ودولته وشعبه ومؤسساته. ولكن ايضا بدورها لم تتمكن القوى المعارضة، بالرغم من كل المحاولات، ان تجمع نفسها حول هذا المشروع معي او من دوني، ونتمكن ان نصل الى 65 صوتا في مجلس النواب من القوى المعارضة ونخوض عندها جميعنا معركة النصاب، ولكن انطلاقا من اكثرية واضحة. ويبقى اكثر من 15 الى 20 نائبا بقيوا مترددين أن يدخلوا في هذا المشروع طبعا لاسباب عبروا عنها، والذي اصبح واضحا اليوم انه لو تمكنا ان نصل الى 65 صوتا كنا في واقع مختلف تماما اليوم”.
وتابع: “والنتيجة اننا وضعنا اليوم امام مواجهة، مواجهة مشروع هيمنة يحاول ان يكسر كل اللبنانيين بمنطق فائض القوة وبكل الاساليب من الضغط الداخلي والتهديد والتهويل. وللضغوطات الاقليمية كانوا يقولون ان غيرهم يتعاطى مع السفارات، وقد راينا بالحقيقة من كان يتعاطى مع السفارات، وكل ذلك ليحاولوا ان يفرضوا علينا مشروع هيمنة يخير اللبنانيين بين الخضوع لمرشح يفرضونه على اللبنانيين والذي يشكل بمشروعه وطريقة ترشيحه، التحدي الحقيقي لللبنانيين. هذا هو مشروع التحدي، والذي يشكل كذلك مسا او حتى انقلابا في جوهر الشراكة الوطنية وبين الفراغ والتعطيل الذي هو ليس هدفا في حد ذاته. هو وسيلة ليصلوا الى الفرض، وهم يحاولون تخيير اللبنانيين عمليا بين الفرض والفرض”.
وأردف معوض: “وامام هذا الواقع، لا يمكننا ان نبقى كقوى معارضة مكتوفي الايدي امام ثنائية الفرض والتعطيل، واصبح الحل الوحيد امامنا لمواجهة هذه الثنائية الخضوع والتعطيل، ان نوسع رقعة التقاطعات، ولنكن واضحين، انه عندما نوسع رقعة التقاطعات مع قوى نتلاقى معها جزئيا او حتى مع قوى لا نتلاقى معها الا على هذا التقاطع، معناها اننا نبعد عن خياراتنا المفضلة، ويمكن المزايدة تجعلنا نقول لا ولنكمل ونزايد ونقول انه لا يمكننا ان نقوم باي امر. ولكن المسالة الوطنية تقتضي علينا ان نتفاعل ايجابا مع هذه التقاطعات، التي اوصلت الى المرشح جهاد ازعور الذي تؤمن له شبه اجماع مسيحي واكثرية وطنية، والذي هو ولو لم يكن مرشحنا المفضل هو مرشح مقبول، مرشح على الاقل قادر ان يمثل مصالح الدولة اللبنانية وقادر ان يحمي لبنان من مزيد من الانهيار ومزيد من الهيمنة”.
وتابع: “انطلاقا من هذه المعطيات، قررت شخصيا وبكل مسؤولية ان اشارك بالوصول الى هذا التقاطع، مع التاكيد اننا سنكمل معركتنا بالرغم من كل الصعوبات من دون تعب او ملل، من دون مواربة او مساومة لنستعيد لبنان الذي يشبهنا، والذي يشبه طاقاته وتاريخه وشهدائه. وقبل ان اعطي الكلام للزميل مارك ضو الذي سيتلو البيان المشترك لقوى المعارضة، اود ان اشكر الزملاء النواب والبعض الموجودين معنا والبعض الذي لم يتمكن من الحضور اليوم والذين اعطونني ثقتهم لامثل المشروع الذي اخوضه معهم، والذي هو مشروع لبنان، واكيد اود شكر جميع اللبنانيين واللبنانيات من كل المناطق من الجنوب والبقاع وبيروت وجبل لبنان والشمال، كم كانوا متعاطفين ومؤيدين للقضية التي تشرفت ان امثلها في هذه المرحلة. اود شكرهم فردا فردا والوعد اننا سنكمل في وجه الهيمنة وفي وجه السلاح والفساد ومحاولات التيئيس، دفاعا عن القضية اللبنانية لنسترجع الوطن والدولة ولنسترجع الثقة والحقوق والاستقرار والامل “.

وتلا النائب ضو البيان المشترك لقوى المعارضة، وجاء فيه: ” منذ بدء الاستحقاق الرئاسي التزمت قوى معارضة برلمانية أصول تشكيل السلطة حسب المقتضيات الدستورية والديموقراطية، فمارست خيارها السياسي الواضح في رفض الهيمنة على القرار السياسي والمؤسسات اللبنانية، وأكدت على احترام سيادة الدولة والتزام قرارات الشرعية الدولية، واعتماد كافة الإصلاحات وعلى رأسها استقلالية القضاء ومحاسبة المسؤولين عن كل الكوارث التي عصفت بلبنان، لاسيما سرقة أموال المودعين والانهيار الاقتصادي، وإعاقة العدالة في تفجير المرفا. فرشحنا النائب ميشال معوض وثابرنا على انتخابه لجلسات 11 مقابل إمعان فريق الممانعة على تعطيل العملية الإنتخابية والديموقراطية والدستورية منتهكا الدولة اللبنانية وآمال اللبنانيين بالخلاص والإنقاذ من الكارثة التي نحن فيها، وأدخل البلاد في شغور رئاسي ما زلنا فيه والوطن بأمس الحاجة لإنهائه”.
وأضاف: “بعد إغلاق المجلس النيابي عنوة وخلافا للدستور، ومنع انتخاب رئيس جديد للجمهورية، مما يفاقم الظروف الكارثية على كل المستويات. أمام هذا الواقع الذي يفرض من قبل فريق يصر على فرض مرشحه للرئاسة او الفراغ، مستعملا كعادته سياسة التهديد والوعيد والتعطيل والفرض على كل اللبنانيين إرادته منفردا، مما أدى ببعض القوى إلى الخروج من اصطفافاتها إلى جانب الممانعة والتواصل معنا لخلق مساحة وتقاطع ينقذ الوطن. جاء هذا التحول لدى الفريق الحليف لحزب الله بعد أن قام هذا الأخير بطعنه في الحكومة ورفض خياراته”.
وتابع: “ومع استعدادها لمواجهة الفرض، تحسسنا كقوى معارضة مرة جديدة حجم المسؤولية الوطنية التي يلقيها عليها كل اللبنانيات واللبنانيين، ورفضنا منطق التحدي وتصدينا له، وأردنا أن ننهي التحدي المقابل، واخترنا من أجل الوطن كسر حلقة الفراغات المتبادلة التي تدمر الوطن. ولم نكتف بمواجهة مرشح الفريق الآخرن بل بحثنا عن بديل مقبول من قوى نيابية متعددة لإعطاء فرصة حقيقية لتوافق كبير على أسس تطمئن كافة الاطراف وتريح المواطنين وتعيد الأمل بالخلاص. وهذا يمهد لحل حقيقي للأزمة الرئاسية نتمنى أن يتمسك به الجميع، فتوصلنا بنتيجة الاتصالات المكثفة إلى التقاطع على اسم الوزير السابق جهاد أزعور كمرشح تلاقي وسطي، غير استفزازي لأي مكون سياسي في البلاد، وهو على تواصل مع الجميع. يمتلك مواصفات شخصية ومهنية وسياسية ويمتع بفرصة جدية للوصول إلى سدة الرئاسة، وبقدرة على مساعدة لبنان للخلاص من الأزمة التي نحن فيها. وتتوافق عليه كتل وازنة مؤلفة من المعارضة وعدد من النواب المستقلين وبعض التغييريين بالاضافة الى “كتلة لبنان القوي”، ولذلك نعلن اليوم استعدادنا للتصويت للمرشح على اساس الثوابت الوطنية واولوية إنقاذ لبنان وإنهاء الفراغ لأن لبنان بحاجة للإنقاذ، ونحن علينا تلك المسؤولية وعلى الآخرين”.
واعتبر أن “المرشح جهاد أزعور ليس مرشح المعارضة فقط، ولم يكن مرشح اي من الكتل سابقا، هو المرشح الحصري الذي تنوي المعارضة التقاطع عليه لخوض المعركة الرئاسية باسمه والأرجح لإنجاز الاستحقاق الرئاسي باسمه، وهي تعتبر ان ما تعلنه اليوم يهدف إلى إيصاله إلى الرئاسة، وهو ليس مناورة ولا تكتيكا ولا محطة، بل محاولة جدية لإطلاق مسيرة الإنقاذ المطلوبة من اجل كل الشعب اللبناني، والتي تبدا حكما بانتخاب رئيس بقرار لبناني من نوابه في البرلمان”.
وأردف: “إن المسؤولية الوطنية تفرض على كل المتقاطعين على ترشيح جهاد ازعور التحلي بأعلى درجات وحدة الموقف منعا لمزيد من إهدار الوقت والفرص لمصالح ذاتية تتعارض مع المصلحة الوطنية العامة. المطلوب اليوم الحسم والوضوح وانهاء الفراغ الرئاسي”.
وختم ضو: “إن قوى المعارضة التي اجتمع ممثلوها اليوم تدعو باقي الزملاء النواب وخصوصا رئيس المجلس النيابي غلى دعوة لالتئام الجلسة ويجب انعقادها فورا حسب الدستور دون أي إبطاء لانتخاب رئيس للجمهورية في جلسات متتالية، كما يدعون الشعب اللبناني بأسره إلى التيقظ والتنبه التام لدقة هذه المرحلة وهذه الفرصة تحديدا، ومواكبة ممثليه وكل النواب والضغط عليهم جميعا للقيام بواحباتهم للمشاركة في جلسة لانتخاب رئيس للجمهورية دون تلكؤ أو تردد وتحديد خيارهم بما ينقذ البلاد. إن الوقت اليوم ليس لعقد صفقات سياسية وللتنصل من المسؤوليات تحت أي ذرائع واهية، انتهى البازار، بل لإنقاذ الوطن والجمهورية والمؤسسات الدستورية. لذلك يدنا ممدودة للتلاقي حول هذا الطرح مع القوى السياسية لاسيما حزب الله وحركة أمل ومن بقي من حلفائهم ومتأهبون في الوقت عينه لمواجهة كل مخططات التعطيل ومحاولة التهويل لأن هذا من واجبنا وهذا دورنا كنواب يكترثون لما يجري في هذا الوطن ويريدون إنقاذه”.

المعارضة اللبنانية تعلن دعم ترشيح أزعور لرئاسة الجمهورية

لم يحسم اتفاق المعارضة مع «التيار الوطني» على ترشيح الوزير السابق جهاد أزعور لرئاسة الجمهورية، إنهاء أزمة الشغور الرئاسي في لبنان، وسط رفض ثنائي «حزب الله» و«حركة أمل» ترشيحه، ووصفه بأنه «مرشح تحدٍ وورقة انتقالية تشبه ترشيح النائب ميشال معوض»، وبوجود آليات قانونية تتيح مقاطعة الجلسات، إضافة إلى ضبابية تحيط بموقف رئيس البرلمان نبيه بري لجهة تحديد موعد جلسة انتخابية، قائلاً: «لتُصدر المعارضة موقفاً واضحاً من مرشحها وعندها أتصرف على ضوئه». وأعلنت المعارضة ترشحيها أزعور مساء الأحد، بعد إعلان النائب معوض سحب ترشيحه، وقالت في بيان: «توصلنا نتيجة الاتصالات المكثفة على اسم جهاد أزعور كاسم وسطي غير استفزازي لأي فريق في البلاد تتوافق عليه كتل من ضمنها (لبنان القوي)»، ودعوا بري إلى الدعوة لجلسة لانتخاب رئيس للجمهورية «فوراً في جلسات متتالية». وتضم المعارضة حزبي «القوات اللبنانية» و«الكتائب اللبنانية» ومجموعة من النواب المستقلين والسياديين ممن يعارضون «حزب الله» وترشيح فرنجية للرئاسة. وانضم إليهم «التيار الوطني الحر»، الذي يترأسه النائب جبران باسيل، في رفض وصول فرنجية.
مباركة الراعي
وحاول البطريرك الماروني بشارة الراعي الذي «بارك كل خطوة في اتجاه التوافق بعيداً عن مقولة غالب ومغلوب»، إحداث خرق، عبر لقاء جمعه برئيس تيار «المردة» سليمان فرنجية، وإرسال موفد من قبله اجتمع مع الأمين العام لـ«حزب الله» حسن نصر الله، حسب ما ذكرت قناة «الجديد»، وأشارت إلى أن موفد الراعي المطران بولس عبد الساتر «أبلغ نصر الله ما سمعه البطريرك عن ضرورة التحاور مع القوى غير المسيحية و(حزب الله) تحديداً لانتخاب رئيس للجمهورية لكل لبنان». وقال الراعي في تصريح تلفزيوني الأحد: «التقيت بفرنجية وسألتقي الجميع ويجب أن نخرج من المأساة التي يعيشها لبنان ولا مشكلة لدينا مع أحد». وأضاف: «لن أدخل في جدال التوافق على اسم جهاد أزعور. أقوم بشغلي، وأعلن عنه في الوقت اللازم».
معوض وبيان المعارضة
وأعلن معوض، خلال مؤتمر صحافي، سحب ترشحه لرئاسة الجمهورية، وقال: «قررت المشاركة في الوصول إلى هذا التقاطع الذي أدى إلى ترشيح جهاد أزعور وسنكمل معركتنا من دون تعب». وقال: «أصبح الخيار الوحيد هو توسيع رقعة التقاطعات، التي أوصلت إلى أزعور وتؤمن له شبه إجماع مسيحي، وهو مرشح مقبول وقادر على حماية لبنان من المزيد من الانهيار والهيمنة». وأضاف: «يريدون تخيير اللبنانيين بين الفرض والفرض، وأمام ذلك لا يمكن أن نبقى كقوى معارضة مكتوفي الأيدي وأصبح الحل الوحيد لمواجهة ثنائية الفرض والتعطيل توسيع رقعة التقاطعات». وقالت المعارضة التي اجتمعت في منزل معوض، في بيان: «توصلنا نتيجة الاتصالات المكثفة على اسم جهاد أزعور كاسم وسطي غير استفزازي لأي فريق في البلاد تتوافق عليه كتل من ضمنها (لبنان القوي)». وأضاف البيان: «المرشح جهاد أزعور ليس مرشح المعارضة فقط وليس مرشحاً حصرياً لأي من الكتل وتنوي المعارضة التقاطع عليه لخوض المعركة الرئاسية باسمه، وهي تعتبر أن ما تعلنه اليوم يهدف إلى إيصاله». وأكدت المعارضة أن أزعور «ليس مرشح المعارضة فقط، وليس مرشحاً حصرياً لأي من الكتل»، مشيرة إلى أن المعارضة «تنوي التقاطع عليه لخوض المعركة الرئاسية باسمه، وهي تعتبر أن ما تعلنه يهدف إلى إيصاله». وأضاف البيان: «يدنا ممدودة للتلاقي مع (حزب الله) وحركة أمل ومن بقي من حلفائهم، وفي الوقت عينه مستعدون لمواجهة كل محاولات التعطيل».
كيف سيتصرف «الثنائي الشيعي» حيال «تقدّم أزعور على فرنجية»؟
«الثنائي» يشكك بانتخابه
لكن إعلان المعارضة، لا يبدو أنه سينهي الشغور الرئاسي، إذ شككت مصادر قريبة من «الثنائي الشيعي» في أن يؤدي إلى انتخاب رئيس، واصفة في تصريحات لـ«الشرق الأوسط» أزعور بأنه «ورقة انتقالية، تشبه ميشال معوض قبله، لأن تقاطع المعارضة عليه لا يشمل البرنامج والمشروع والخطة، بل تم التقاطع فقط لقطع الطريق على فرنجية». وإذ تركت المصادر أمر انعقاد الجلسة لتقدير رئيس مجلس النواب نبيه بري «الذي يعطيه الدستور الصلاحية الكاملة والواضحة بمعزل عن الضغوط الإعلامية»، قالت المصادر إن السيناريو المتوقع في حال الدعوة لجلسة «لن يختلف عن السيناريوهات السابقة لجهة استحالة انتخاب أحد المرشحين بأكثرية الثلثين (86 نائباً)»، و«الحق القانوني بتطيير نصاب الجلسة في الدورة الثانية»، التي تحتاج إلى حضور أكثرية الثلثين، وانتخابه بـ«النصف زائد واحد». وقالت المصادر: «إذا طار النصاب مرة واثنين وأكثر، سيكون مصيره مثل مصير معوض في السابق، حيث يستحيل انتخاب رئيس من دون توافق». وقالت المصادر: «أزعور ليس مرشح قوى داخلية ولا دولاً إقليمية»، مشيرة إلى أن «المرشح المستور للمعارضة معروف»، من غير أن تسميه المصادر، «بينما المرشح المعلن المعدّ لحرق اسمه، هو أزعور»، واصفة أزعور بأنه «مشروع تحدٍ». وقالت المصادر: «بهذا المعنى، لا يحق لأحد المزايدة علينا واتهام فرنجية بأنه مرشح تحدٍ». وتستدل المصادر إلى تقديرها بأن الشغور الرئاسي لن ينتهي، بالقول إنه «لا توافق داخلياً، بينما لم تنعكس التهدئة الإقليمية على الداخل اللبناني». وقالت المصادر إن المعارضة وباسيل «مختلفون على كل شيء. على الاسم والمشروع، ولا يجمعهم إلا الاتفاق على قطع الطريق على وصول فرنجية»، في مقابل «تمسك فريقنا باسم فرنجية». وأضافت المصادر: «أزعور ليس مرشحهم الجدي، يطرحونه للمناورة والتفاوض»، داعية المعارضة وباسيل «للحوار من دون شروط مسبقة»، في إشارة إلى اشتراط التخلي عن اسم فرنجية مقابل الحوار، قائلة إن «الشرط المسبق يعني فرض مرشح على الآخرين أيضاً». واتهمت المعارضة «برفض فرنجية لأنه مرشح له موقف واضح داعم للمقاومة، وليس لأي سبب آخر»، مضيفة أنه مدعوم من ماروني أباً عن جد، وليس شيعياً، ولو أنه مدعوم من الثنائي الشيعي. وانتقدت المصادر موقف باسيل، الرافض لفرنجية بالقول إنه لا يمتلك صفة تمثيلية كبيرة في الشارع المسيحي. وقالت المصادر: «لم يشهد لبنان انتخاب رئيس يمتلك أكثرية نيابية غير ميشال عون، إذ يحتاج إلى دعم وتأييد قوى نيابية ويتفق معها على مشروع وبرنامج»، وتوجهت بالسؤال: «هل أزعور يمتلك مشروعاً؟ وهل سواه من المرشحين الذين يدفع باسيل وسواه نحو انتخابه، يمتلك برنامجاً؟»، واصفة الأمر بـ«الذريعة غير المنطقية، لأن العبرة ليست في حجم الكتلة النيابية، بل بالقدرة على جمعه أصواتاً لانتخابه في جلسة الانتخابات الرئاسية».
أزعور – «حزب الله»
وكشفت المصادر أن أزعور عندما التقى بـ«حزب الله»، أبلغهم أن برنامجه «ينحصر في التفاوض مع صندوق النقد، وتعيين وزير للمال، وتعيين حاكم لمصرف لبنان»، بينما «لا يمتلك أي رؤية للصراع في إسرائيل، والعلاقات بدول الجوار، ومواكبة التحولات في المنطقة والتحولات الإقليمية»، كما «لا يمتلك أي مشروع على المستوى الداخلي»، وقالت إنه لا يفكر إلا بأنه يمتلك فرصاً للوصول إلى الرئاسة، مثل أي مواطن لبناني ينتمي للطائفة المارونية.

Christian opposition backs Jihad Azour’s nomination for Lebanon presidency

BEIRUT: Patriarch Bechara Al-Rai has praised Christian politicians as they united around a presidential candidate, in a move that could end a nearly eight-month power vacuum in Lebanon. His blessings during Sunday sermon came after opposition parliamentary blocs agreed to support the nomination of Jihad Azour, a former minister who is the director of the International Monetary Fund’s Middle East and Central Asia department. He is expected to contest the presidency against Suleiman Frangieh, the preferred candidate of Hezbollah, the Amal Movement and their allies. Al-Rahi also sent Bishop Paul Abdel Sater on Sunday to meet Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah as part of “dialogue with non-Christian forces, especially Hezbollah, to elect a president for all of Lebanon.”The bishop is expected to continue visiting all political forces this week. Sunday’s move by the opposition parliamentary blocs follows an announcement by the Free Patriotic Movement on Saturday. There is now agreement between Christian MPs, Change MPs and some independent MPs to nominate Azour after Michel Moawad, an MP, withdrew from the election on Sunday. Some had previously supported Moawad, whom Hezbollah saw as a provocative candidate. The Progressive Socialist Party bloc is due to announce its position on Azour on Tuesday. The decision to back Azour by the FPM, the largest Christian party in parliament, came after its leader Gebran Bassil fell out with Hezbollah after the group’s nomination of Frangieh. “In the event of a call to a presidential election session, the FPM will vote for the agreed-upon name instead of submitting a blank ballot,” he said. Waddah Sadek, an MP, told Arab News that estimates of the opposition indicate that Azour will receive more than 65 votes, which means he would win if a vote went to a second round. “The ball will then be in the court of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who has been delaying the call for an election session since January unless he and his allies secure the election of Frangieh,” he said. MPs have failed in 11 sessions to elect a new president due to the lack of quorum in the second round of each, as a result of the withdrawal of Hezbollah and Amal Movement MPs. Hashem Safi, the head of the party’s political council, dismissed the significance of Azour’s nomination.
“There is no single party capable of electing a president in Lebanon, regardless of the candidate’s name, nature, affiliation, color, or political choices,” he said. “Therefore, unless the parties agree with each other, we cannot accomplish the presidential election.” During his sermon, Al-Rahi said: “If the political officials invoked God, they would have elected a president within the two months before the end of Michel Aoun’s term. “They would have rushed to agree on electing a president that Lebanon needs in the face of complete political, economic, financial, and social collapse.” Mohammed Khawaja, an Amal MP, said that the nomination of Azour was a ruse to block Frangieh, adding that he lacked the reformist vision that Lebanon needed. Former MP Fares Souaid, head of the National Council to End the Iranian Occupation of Lebanon, described the Christian parties’ reconciliation as “brave.”He said that confronting Hezbollah could not be done through ballot boxes or electoral alliances. “The confrontation lies in re-forming internal unity around the Lebanese choice based on the Taif Agreement and coexistence,” he said. “Confronting one sect against another is dangerous. A ballot box against a gun is dangerous. Spreading illusions in the face of killing is dangerous.”

Opposition officially endorses Azour for presidency

Opposition lawmakers on Sunday nominated Jihad Azour, an International Monetary Fund regional director and former minister, for president. MP Mark Daou of the Change bloc read a statement on behalf of 32 opposition legislators, endorsing Azour after weeks of negotiations “as a candidate that is not considered provocative by any political factor in the country.” The lawmakers belong to the Lebanese Forces, the Kataeb Party and the Tajaddod bloc in addition to several independent and Change MPs. The same MPs had previously backed another presidential candidate, parliamentarian Michel Mouawad, who on Sunday announced he was withdrawing his nomination and backing Azour. Both declarations were made at Mouawad’s residence. Azour, the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia director, served as Lebanon’s finance minister from 2005 to 2008. He has yet to officially announce a presidential bid. The international community has urged Lebanese officials to fill the vacant presidency, which would allow the country, mired in a crippling economic crisis since 2019, to carry out reforms needed to unlock much needed IMF loans. Iran-backed Hezbollah, which has a huge hold over political life in Lebanon, has endorsed the pro-Damascus Suleiman Franjieh for the presidency. But opposition from the country’s two main Christian parties, the LF and the Free Patriotic Movement, means that Franjieh lacks a clear path to majority backing in the divided parliament. Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah called Azour’s nomination “a waste of time,” insisting that “the candidate of confrontation” will not be elected president. Hezbollah’s key Christian ally, the Free Patriotic Movement, said it would support Azour. With no clear majority for any candidate, it is unclear when Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri might call a new vote. Former president Michel Aoun’s term expired last October. Since then, there have been 11 parliamentary votes to try to name a new president, but bitter divisions have prevented anyone from garnering enough support to succeed Aoun. Crisis-hit Lebanon has been run by a caretaker government with limited powers since legislative elections in May 2022 resulted in no side with a clear majority.

Moawad steps aside; opposition unites behind Azour for Lebanon’s Presidency

Opposition Forces, FPM signal potential alliance, nominating Azour for Presidency

In a significant development that could reshape Lebanon’s political landscape, signals of a potential alliance between opposition forces and the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) have emerged. The announcement came from the Leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, on Saturday in Jbeil, in the presence of former President Michel Aoun. Bassil declared that they had found common ground with other parliamentary blocs on the nomination of Jihad Azour for the presidency, among other suitable candidates. This convergence marks an important milestone in their efforts to demonstrate unity and agreement. This was completed with the positions launched from Deputy Michel Mouawad’s office, chosen by opposition deputies from the Lebanese Forces and the Kataeb, and renewed with some Change MPs and independents intentionally because Mouawad was the opposition’s primary candidate. He participated in this competition with competence, and he willingly agreed to withdraw in favor of a candidate with a higher percentage of votes. Yassine to LBCI: My choice will be what is best for everyone to get out of the “hell” we are in

MP Yassine Yassine stressed his keenness that his choice, regarding the presidential election, be the best for everyone to get out of the “hell” we are in, stressing that this is the choice he will take. In the event that an agreement is reached later on the name of Army Commander Joseph Aoun, Yassin explained on LBCI’s “Nharkom Said” TV show that Aoun’s program is not clear and unknown until this moment. He called for the next president to be a patriot.

President of coexistence: Jaafari Mufti stresses importance of national interests

In a speech during a memorial ceremony in Meiss El Jabal on Sunday, Jaafari Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Qabalan stressed the urgent need to save the Lebanese entity and coexistence. “The focus of our national demand today revolves around saving the country and the people from the worst disaster affecting them and our national formula,” Qabalan said. He added that the Lebanese want a president of coexistence, “not a president of challenge,” since the challenge in this country “takes us towards ruin, and our interests are the same, Muslims and Christians, and we do not accept breaking anyone, for our national interests are above all considerations.” The Jaafari Mufti urged to secure a clear settlement, to avoid leaving Lebanon “to an international lottery game.” He added, “Some must understand that the international community is a stock exchange of ruin, and the history of the civil war has revealed to us the world that dealt with Lebanon as a barricade […] A game of international graveyards, and endless attrition projects.” He said the current political battle is a battle of sovereignty and belonging based on coexistence and national interests. “It is the same as what the resistance has presented and is presenting as a strategic guarantor for Lebanon, and it is the same as what the national duo is doing […] The solution lies within the parliament council as a constitutional institution that guarantees Lebanese sovereignty and national partnership, and whoever loses the way to parliament will find no benefit in the entire world,” he stated.

Bassil: Safieddine spoke of need for consensus and we support it

Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil has announced that the FPM has “intersected” with the opposition over Jihad Azour’s nomination, while noting that “this intersection is important but not enough for the election of a president.”“This intersection is important in order to say that we have agreed, and when we made the agreement they (Suleiman Franjieh and his backers) went crazy,” Bassil added, during an overnight speech in Jbeil. He, however, said that “an agreement with the other camp is needed” as well as an agreement among Azour’s supporters over “the election mechanism and the president’s program.”“A reformist, salvation program is what would unite everyone over directions that are more important then the president. This would lead to the election of a president who would be immunized by the agreement over a program and his success would be guaranteed,” Bassil added. “We want a president not imposed by anyone on us, but we don’t want to impose a president on anyone, and this is the equation of national partnership,” he said. He added: “Hezbollah executive council head Sayyed Hashem Safieddine has spoken of the need for consensus and we support it.”

MP Mohammad Khawaja commented this morning in an interview with “Voice of All Lebanon” Radio Channel, on the announcement of Free Patriotic Movement Chief Gebran Bassil, endorsing the nomination of former minister Jihad Azour for the presidency of the republic, where Khawaja considered that the name of Jihad Azour was proposed to undermine the candidacy of the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh. He added, “Azour does not have a reform vision and does not enjoy this characteristic.”Regarding the call for a session to elect a president, Khawaja revealed that the majority of deputies hoped that House Speaker Nabih Berri would not call for an election session after 11 sessions have already been held to no avail. He also stressed that the Liberation and Development bloc insists on nominating Franjieh for presidency. Regarding the sanctions to be imposed on those responsible for obstructing the presidential elections, Khawaja confirmed that Speaker Berri is not subject to blackmail and threats, meaning that the issue of sanctions does not concern the “Amal Movement”. He added, “Our relations are clear before a friend as well as an opponent.” Regarding the role of the resistance, Khawaja considered that had it not been for the residence, Israel would not have given gas to Lebanon, deeming that “the resistance is a need and He added that he advocates equipping the Lebanese army with weapons, and supports diversified armament and not only American.

He considered that “the intersection over more than one name gives more flexibility and constitutes a positive and important development, so no one accuses FPM of obstruction.” Bassil also deemed that having consensus over the name of a presidential candidate and the agreement of the main blocs to support him and give him the necessary representation, denotes compensation for those who lack access to Christian representation. “In the event of a call for a session to elect a president, the Free Patriotic Movement will vote for the name that was agreed upon instead of voting by a white ballot paper,” he affirmed.
