America’s Days Of Lead?

The assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, while speaking on a university campus in Utah, has rightly shocked many. Some well-read commentators have compared it to the July 1936 assassination of Spanish conservative politician Jose Calvo Sotelo only days before the Spanish Civil War, intimating that America could suffer a similar fate. There is no doubt that the Kirk murder is one of the most significant political assassinations in American history but the political environment in 1936 Spain was very different than the United States today.
Three recent high-profile acts of murder coming so close together have generated great anger and polarized public opinion, especially on the political right. On August 27, 2025 a transgender named Robert (Robin) Westman shot up a Minneapolis Catholic Church full of children, killing two small boys and injuring 17 other people, many of them children.[1] Westman was not only transgender (reportedly regretting the effect “trans and weed” had had on his life) but seemed to also revel in other identities – anti-Trump, antisemitic, anti-Christian. Westman was not “radicalized” by one thing, but all sorts of things.[2]
Five days earlier, a mentally ill black man with a long criminal record (and a history of being constantly released by the authorities) DeCarlos Brown Jr. stabbed to death Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte, North Carolina light rail.[3] Although the Zarutska murder happened before the Minneapolis church attack, it became a public controversy afterwards, in early September, once the horrific video of the killing was disseminated on social media, especially on Twitter.
The assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10 came exactly two weeks after the Minneapolis killings with the controversy on the Zarutska murder occurring in between the two other incidents. While as of this writing no culprit has been identified in the Kirk murder, it was certainly the targeted killing of a popular conservative figure and supporter of President Trump.
Some (especially anonymously on social media) on the political left cheered the Kirk murder. A scoop by Steven Crowder revealed that the rifle used in the killing had been found and that “the spent cartridge was still chambered in addition to three unspent rounds at the top fed magazine. All cartridges have engraved wording on them, expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology.”[4]
The three incidents are not the same. Two – Charlotte and Minneapolis – involve mental health issues (some might suggest demonic possession). Those two incidents also symbolize sacred cows of the Left’s identity politics – the empowering of bizarre sexual minorities and the distributing of violent, mentally ill criminals onto America’s streets (a project promoted by, among others, leftist billionaire George Soros).[5]
Two, it seems – Minneapolis and Charlie Kirk – have a clear ideological component, they are against someone, not random acts of violence. The targeting of a Catholic church and a political activist (who was also a sincere Christian) beloved by many young college students were choices. Both are “condensation symbols” that attract some and enrage others.[6] Put together, the three disparate incidents create the impression of a slow-motion crisis, of a nation in peril amid sinister centrifugal forces.[7] We do not know exactly what is going on but instinctively comprehend that both order and civilization are being battered and that “some men just want to watch the world burn.”[8]
If not the Spanish Civil War, then where could these acts of violence – especially the assassination of Charlie Kirk – lead us? Political violence in general seems on the upswing, including in the United States.[9] Certainly, political rhetoric is through the roof.[10] While this rhetoric exists across the political spectrum, it is the left that has played the ultimate rhetorical card. The veteran liberal magazine The New Republic portrayed Trump (father of a Jewish convert and grandfather of Jewish children) as Hitler on its cover in May 2024 and asked “why waste time debating the extent of Trump’s fascism when we ought to be fighting it instead.”[11] Similar, even blunter, sentiments are widespread among the left-leaning commentariat.[12]
In our society, to compare someone to Hitler or his followers to fascists is the ultimate step toward demonization, the ultimate targeting, and yet that has happened repeatedly for a decade now. The United States allied with Stalin and firebombed entire cities to stop Hitler. If this was indeed a real threat (rather than political hot air) anything would be fair game. So, when pundits or academics or politicians like Kamala Harris made such accusations, it should come as no surprise that others believe it and act upon it.[13] Today we do not see people being killed because they are fascists; innocent people are labeled fascists so that they can be killed.
Ideally, the U.S. government should use all its legal and law enforcement tools to prosecute to the full extent of the law and methodically expose the leftist industrial complex’s massive enabling infrastructure – from foreign governments, big donors and foundations to “Globalize the Intifada” academics and Antifa and ethnic nationalist foot soldiers. That is the best way to combat the emergence of a violent, revolutionary left.[14]
A lack of accountability or urgency could open up other dire possibilities. America could descend into a scenario similar to the “dirty wars” of Latin America, with its leftist and rightist killers, or like the ” Anni di Piombo [Years of Lead]” in Italy from the late 1960s to the 1980s where ideologically-driven political violence between civilians spiked as the state ineffectually tried to rein in both. “Communist and leftist groups such as the Red Brigades were responsible for the majority of the violence during the Years of Lead and had the greatest degree of organization and number of adherents” but that is often forgotten and for some, all they remember is that there was also so-called “black terrorism” practiced by various neo-fascist groups.[15]
Although Italy eventually recovered from those dark days, it would be a historic tragedy if the United States were to descend into a type of mutually-reinforcing political vigilantism of the left and right. With America and the world inexorably headed for a period of extreme turmoil – as a result of artificial intelligence, the debt bomb, the birth dearth, and extreme polarization – this is a time for building rather than demolishing, for strengthening the core of the American nation-state, for unity rather than division, for fighting the good fight and looking inwardly rather than being distracted by foreign adventures.[16]
We will know more once the killer is identified. Perhaps the identity will surprise us. But the assassination of Charlie Kirk – the most prominent killing of a political activist since Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968 – seems like a major inflection point.[17] We are closer to the abyss than we have been for a while, a process which has been slowly unfolding over decades. This is the time to respond, but also to be firmly planted and to stand fast, rather than be swept away into the plunging darkness.

لقد صدمت جريمة اغتيال الناشط المحافظ الأميركي تشارلي كيرك، أثناء إلقائه كلمة في إحدى جامعات ولاية يوتا، الرأي العام الأميركي بشدّة. وقد شبّه بعض المعلقين المطلعين هذه الجريمة باغتيال السياسي المحافظ الإسباني خوسيه كالفو سوتيلو في تموز 1936، أي قبل أيام قليلة من اندلاع الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية، ملمّحين إلى أن الولايات المتحدة قد تلقى المصير نفسه. ولا شك أن اغتيال كيرك يُعدّ واحداً من أبرز الاغتيالات السياسية في تاريخ الولايات المتحدة، غير أن البيئة السياسية في إسبانيا عام 1936 كانت مختلفة جداً عن واقع الولايات المتحدة اليوم.
ثلاث جرائم قتل بارزة وقعت خلال فترة زمنية قصيرة نسبياً ولّدت غضباً شديداً واستقطبت الرأي العام، لا سيما في صفوف اليمين السياسي. ففي 27 آب 2025، قام شخص متحوّل جنسياً يُدعى روبرت (روبن) ويستمان بإطلاق النار داخل كنيسة كاثوليكية في مينيابوليس مكتظة بالأطفال، ما أسفر عن مقتل طفلين صغيرين وإصابة 17 شخصاً آخرين، معظمهم أطفال.[1] ويُذكر أن ويستمان لم يكن فقط متحوّلاً جنسياً (وكان نادماً على تأثير “التحوّل والمخدرات” في حياته كما ورد)، بل كان أيضاً يستمتع باعتناق هويات متعددة – معادٍ لترامب، معادٍ لليهود، معادٍ للمسيحية. لم يكن ويستمان “متطرفاً” بسبب فكرة واحدة، بل نتيجة خليط من الأفكار.[2]
وقبل خمسة أيام من تلك الحادثة، أقدم رجل أسود مضطرب نفسياً وله سجل إجرامي طويل (وكانت السلطات تطلق سراحه مراراً) يُدعى ديكارلوس براون جونيور على طعن اللاجئة الأوكرانية إيرينا زاروتسكا حتى الموت داخل قطار المترو الخفيف في مدينة شارلوت بولاية نورث كارولاينا.[3] ورغم أن جريمة قتل زاروتسكا سبقت حادثة كنيسة مينيابوليس، إلا أنها أثارت الجدل بعد ذلك، في مطلع أيلول، حين انتشر مقطع فيديو مروّع لعملية القتل على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، وخاصة على منصة تويتر.
ثم جاء اغتيال تشارلي كيرك في 10 أيلول، أي بعد أسبوعين تماماً من مجزرة مينيابوليس، وفيما كانت جريمة زاروتسكا محور جدل عام بين الحادثتين. وحتى لحظة كتابة هذا المقال، لم يتم تحديد هوية القاتل بعد، لكن من المؤكد أن الحادثة كانت عملية اغتيال استهدفت شخصية محافظة معروفة ومؤيدة للرئيس ترامب.
وقد هلّل بعض أنصار اليسار (خصوصاً بشكل مجهول على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي) لاغتيال كيرك. وكشف الصحفي ستيفن كراودر أن البندقية التي استُخدمت في الجريمة تم العثور عليها وبداخلها ظرف فارغ لا يزال في بيت النار بالإضافة إلى ثلاث طلقات غير مستعملة في مخزن الرصاص العلوي، وقد نُقشت على جميع الطلقات عبارات تعبّر عن أيديولوجيا متحوّلة الجنس ومعادية للفاشية.[4]
ليست هذه الحوادث الثلاث متشابهة تماماً. اثنتان منها – شارلوت ومينيابوليس – تنطويان على اضطرابات نفسية (وقد يرى البعض أن فيها مسّاً شيطانياً). وهما تعبّران أيضاً عن “البقرات المقدسة” في سياسة الهوية اليسارية – تمكين الأقليات الجنسية الشاذة، وإطلاق المجرمين المضطربين نفسياً في شوارع أمريكا (وهو مشروع يموّله جزئياً الملياردير اليساري جورج سوروس).[5]
ويبدو أن اثنتين من الحوادث – مينيابوليس واغتيال كيرك – تحملان بوضوح بعداً أيديولوجياً، حيث استهدفتا جهة معيّنة، ولم تكونا أعمال عنف عشوائية. فقد تم اختيار كنيسة كاثوليكية وناشط سياسي (وكان أيضاً مسيحياً مؤمناً) محبوب من طلاب الجامعات الشباب كأهداف للهجوم. وكلاهما يُعدّ “رمزين تكثيفيين” يستقطبان البعض ويستفزان آخرين.[6] وعند جمع هذه الحوادث الثلاث المتباينة معاً، يتكوّن انطباع بوجود أزمة بطيئة الحركة، وأمة مهددة بقوى طاردة خبيثة.[7] لا نعرف تماماً ما الذي يجري، لكننا نستشعر غريزياً أن النظام والحضارة يتعرضان للضربات، وأن “بعض الرجال يريدون فقط مشاهدة العالم يحترق.”[8]
فإلى أين يمكن أن تقودنا هذه الأعمال العنيفة – خصوصاً اغتيال تشارلي كيرك – إن لم تكن إلى حرب أهلية شبيهة بالحرب الإسبانية؟ إن العنف السياسي عموماً يبدو في تصاعد، بما في ذلك في الولايات المتحدة نفسها.[9] ولا شك أن الخطاب السياسي بلغ مستويات غير مسبوقة من التوتر.[10] ورغم أن هذا الخطاب موجود عبر كامل الطيف السياسي، إلا أن اليسار هو من استخدم الورقة الخطابية القصوى. فقد نشرت مجلة “ذا نيو ريبابليك” الليبرالية العريقة على غلافها في أيار 2024 صورة ترامب (والد متحوّلة إلى اليهودية وجدّ لأطفال يهود) في هيئة هتلر، وتساءلت: “لماذا نضيّع الوقت في مناقشة مدى فاشية ترامب، بينما ينبغي علينا محاربتها بدلاً من ذلك؟”[11] وقد انتشرت مشاعر مشابهة، بل وأكثر حدّة، بين معظم المعلّقين اليساريين.[12]
في مجتمعنا، إن تشبيه شخص بهتلر أو أتباعه بالفاشيين هو الخطوة القصوى نحو شيطنته واستهدافه، وقد تكرر ذلك مراراً طوال العقد الماضي. لقد تحالفت الولايات المتحدة مع ستالين وأحرقت مدناً بأكملها بالنار لإيقاف هتلر. وإذا كان هذا تهديداً حقيقياً (وليس مجرد كلام سياسي أجوف)، فإن كل شيء يصبح مباحاً. لذا، عندما يطلق معلّقون أو أكاديميون أو سياسيون مثل كامالا هاريس مثل هذه الاتهامات، فلا غرابة في أن هناك من يصدقها ويتصرف بناءً عليها.[13] اليوم لا يُقتل الناس لأنهم فاشيون؛ بل يُلصق وصف الفاشية بالأبرياء حتى يُبرَّر قتلهم.
من الناحية المثالية، ينبغي على الحكومة الأميركية استخدام كل أدواتها القانونية والأمنية لملاحقة الجناة إلى أقصى حدود القانون، وفضح البنية التحتية الضخمة التي تمكّن اليسار الثوري العنيف – بدءاً من الحكومات الأجنبية، والجهات المانحة الكبرى، والمؤسسات، وصولاً إلى الأكاديميين الداعين لـ”تعميم الانتفاضة”، وجماعات أنتيـفا، والمليشيات القومية العرقية.[14] هذه هي أفضل وسيلة لمواجهة صعود اليسار الثوري العنيف.
إن غياب المحاسبة أو الشعور بالإلحاح قد يفتح الباب أمام سيناريوهات مروّعة أخرى. فقد تنحدر أمريكا إلى وضع يشبه “الحروب القذرة” في أميركا اللاتينية، بين قتلة يساريين ويمينيين، أو إلى مرحلة “سنوات الرصاص” في إيطاليا بين أواخر الستينيات والثمانينيات، حين بلغ العنف السياسي الأيديولوجي بين المدنيين ذروته بينما كانت الدولة عاجزة عن كبح الطرفين. وكانت “الجماعات الشيوعية واليسارية مثل الألوية الحمراء مسؤولة عن معظم أعمال العنف في سنوات الرصاص، وكانت الأكثر تنظيماً والأوسع انتشاراً”، لكن هذا كثيراً ما يُتجاهل، إذ لا يتذكر البعض سوى ما يسمّى “الإرهاب الأسود” الذي مارسته بعض الجماعات النيو-فاشية.[15]
ورغم أن إيطاليا تعافت في نهاية المطاف من تلك الحقبة المظلمة، فإن انحدار الولايات المتحدة إلى دوامة من العنف السياسي المتبادل بين اليسار واليمين سيكون مأساة تاريخية كبرى. ففي وقت تتجه فيه أمريكا والعالم حتماً نحو مرحلة من الاضطراب الشديد – بفعل الذكاء الاصطناعي، وقنبلة الديون، وانهيار معدلات الولادة، والاستقطاب الحاد – فإن هذه لحظة للبناء لا للهدم، ولتعزيز الأسس لا لنسفها.
