The naive belief is found only on the Israeli side. There is not a single serious person in Lebanon who believes that President Aoun and the Shiite Lebanese Army will protect the border and prevent Hezbollah from returning to being an influential factor. A well-known proverb in Arabic concerns two men from the Falugata who look together at a creature they see in a field. “It’s a bird,” says one. “You’re wrong,” says the other, “It’s a goat.” The argument heats up, and there is no agreement. Suddenly, the creature flaps its wings and flies away. One turns to the other: “I told you it was a bird.” His friend replies: “It’s a goat, even if it flew.”
The parable: Many of the experts among us have understood that what is happening in our neighbor Lebanon stems from dreams and illusions, and there is nothing between it and reality. Unfortunately, this does not only concern Lebanon, because their conduct towards the Palestinians is no different, and reality always slaps them in the face – and we all feel the pain of the slap.

الاعتقاد الساذج لا يوجد إلا في الجانب الإسرائيلي. لا يوجد في لبنان شخص جدي واحد يعتقد أن الرئيس عون والجيش اللبناني سيحميان الحدود ويمنعان حزب الله من العودة ليكون عاملاً مؤثراً. هناك مثل عربي معروف يتحدث عن رجلين ينظران معًا إلى مخلوق شاهداه في الحقل. “إنه طائر”، يقول أحدهم. “أنت مخطئ”، يقول الآخر، “إنه عنزة”. يشتعل الجدال، ولا يوجد اتفاق. فجأة يرفرف المخلوق بجناحيه ويطير بعيدًا. يتحول أحدهما إلى الآخر: “لقد قلت لك أنه طائر”. فأجابه صديقه: إنها عنزة، ولو طارت. المثل: هناك الكثير من الخبراء بيننا يفهمون أن ما يحدث في جارنا لبنان هو مجرد أحلام وأوهام، وليس بينه وبين الواقع شيء. ولكن للأسف فإن هذا الأمر لا ينطبق على لبنان فقط، لأن سلوكه تجاه الفلسطينيين لا يختلف، والواقع يضربه دائماً في وجهه ــ ونحن جميعاً نشعر بألم الصفعة.

הנמשל: רבים המומחים הקיימים בקרבנו שהבנתם בנעשה בשכנתנו לבנון מקורה בחלומות ואשליות, ואין בינה לבין המציאות דבר וחצי דבר. למרבה הצער, אין הדבר נוגע רק ללבנון, כי גם התנהלותם מול הפלסטינים איננה שונה, ותמיד המציאות טופחת על פניהם – ואת כאבה של הטפיחה כולנו חשים.
