Unfortunately we have discovered that not much can be done for Lebanon at this point in time because of the richness under water across from its coasts. The local political establishment, while bickering over administrative distributions, is dead united on preserving access to slices of energy income. They call it “wehdat el balad.” In fact it is unity of repartition of benefits to come. Lebanon’s natural resources’ luck has become the main obstruction to its own liberation. Neither Washington or Brussels can unlock such a financial appetite of the Lebanese elite. The last opportunities were in 2005 and 2008. Would a future generation produce the change? Or is the new generation already building new path? I have no way of knowing from afar.

للأسف لقد استنتجنا أن العالم الحر غير قادر أن يساعد لبنان لتحرير نفسه بسبب الثروة الهائلة في جوف مياهه الاقتصادية. فالطبقة السياسية التي تتخاصم حول الحصص الإدارية متفقة على الستاتيكو القائم وهو الضامن للاقتسام الأكبر الأتي للثروة الغازية الهائلة. إن من يمنع تغيير الستاتيكو القائم هم
حماته. لقد رأينا ذلك في 2005 و 2008. إن واشنطن وبروكسل غير قادرين على أحداث تغيير دون السياسيين اللبنانيين. واللبنانيين غير قادرين على التحرك دون السياسيين. وهؤلاء باتوا جزءا من المعادلة الغازية التي يلقبونها ب وحدة البلد. لا ادري إن كانت هنالك طبقة شابة قادرة على أحداث التغيير في المعادلة أم إن الطبقة السياسية قد ضمنت تجميد جيلا كاملا من التحرك. أتمنى أن يكون هناك ما لا اعرفه ولكنني اشك. إلا أنني أصارح الأصدقاء بما أراه واقعا عندما اسأل عن الموقف الدولي. فالعقدة في لبنان وليست في خارجه. لنأمل بان يكون العام الأتي محملا بما لا نعرفه بعد فالذي نعرفه الآن لا يحوي على إجابة.
