I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.’ But what is the divine reply to him? ‘I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace. What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. لا شَكَّ أَنَّكُم تَقُولُونَ لي هذَا المَثَل: أَيُّها الطَّبيب، إِشْفِ نَفسَكَ إنجيل القدّيس لوقا04/من22حتى30/:”كانَ جمبعُ الَّذين في المَجْمَع يَشْهَدُونَ لَيَسُوع، ويَتَعَجَّبُونَ مِن كَلِمَاتِ النِّعْمَةِ الخَارِجَةِ مِنْ فَمِهِ، ويَقُولُون: «أَلَيْسَ هذَا ٱبنَ يُوسُف؟». فقَالَ لَهُم: «لا شَكَّ أَنَّكُم تَقُولُونَ لي هذَا المَثَل: أَيُّها الطَّبيب، إِشْفِ نَفسَكَ. وكُلُّ ما سَمِعْنا أَنَّكَ صَنَعْتَهُ في كَفَرْنَاحُوم، إِصْنَعْهُ أَيْضًا هُنَا في وَطَنِكَ!». ثُمَّ قَال: «أَلحَقَّ أَقُولُ لَكُم: لا يُقْبَلُ نَبِيٌّ في وَطَنِهِ. وَبِٱلحَقِّ أَقُولُ لَكُم: أَرَامِلُ كَثِيرَاتٌ كُنَّ في إِسْرائِيل، أَيَّامَ إِيلِيَّا، حِينَ أُغلِقَتِ السَّماءُ ثَلاثَ سِنِينَ وسِتَّةَ أَشْهُر، وحَدَثَتْ مَجَاعَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ في كُلِّ البِلاد، ولَمْ يُرسَلْ إِيليَّا إِلى أَيٍّ مِنهُنَّ، بَلْ أُرسِلَ إِلى ٱمْرَأَةٍ أَرمَلَةٍ في صَرْفَتِ صَيْدَا. وبُرْصٌ كَثِيرُونَ كانُوا في إِسرائِيل، أَيَّامَ إِلِيشَعَ النَّبيّ، فَلَمْ يَطْهُرْ أَيٌّ مِنْهُم، بَلْ طَهُرَ نُعْمَانُ السُّرْيَانِيّ ». فٱمْتَلأَ جَمِيعُ الَّذِينَ في المَجْمَعِ غَضَبًا، حِينَ سَمِعُوا ذلِكَ. وقَامُوا فَأَخْرَجُوهُ إِلى خَارِجِ المَدِينَة، وٱقْتَادُوهُ إِلى حَرْفِ الجَبَل، المَبْنِيَّةِ عَلَيْهِ مَدِينَتُهُم، لِيَطْرَحُوهُ عَنْهُ. أَمَّا هُوَ فَجَازَ في وَسَطِهِم وَمَضَى.”
