Frangieh threatens to attend election sessions if Aoun takes to the streets

BEIRUT: Marada Movement leader Sleiman Frangieh has warned his presidential opponent Michel Aoun against pushing him to attend election sessions by calling for street protests.
“If the Change and Reform leader wants to change the rules of a democratic game by taking to the streets, then all the taboos will fall and all options will be open, and I will head to the Parliament to attend the election session,” Frangieh told Al-Joumhouria newspaper in remarks published Friday.
Aoun, who is backed by Hezbollah, some of its March 8 allies and the Lebanese Forces, warned in a speech earlier this month against electing a new president who does not enjoy wide representation within the Christian community, an allusion to Frangieh.
He also called on his supporters in the Free Patriotic Movement to be ready to take to the streets to bring about a change in the current political situation.
Frangieh was nominated for the presidency by Future Movement leader Saad Hariri as part of an initiative aimed at ending the 22-month long power vacuum. Frangieh is also backed by Speaker Nabih Berri, MP Walid Jumblatt and some independent lawmakers.
The Marada chief has been boycotting the presidential election sessions in line with his allies, Aoun and Hezbollah for nearly two years. Thirty-seven election sessions have failed, mostly due to a lack of quorum.
Frangieh underlined that he would back Aoun over the election of a centrist candidate, but emphasized that he will not exclude himself simply to give Aoun what he wants.
Asked about Hezbollah’s stance on his nomination, Frangieh told his interviewer that the party had not requested for him to withdraw in Aoun’s favor.
“Even if the party (Hezbollah) had demanded it, I would not do it because I refuse to exclude myself,” Frangieh said.
Aoun and Frangieh are affiliated to the Hezbollah-led March 8 coalition.
A rift between the two March 8 candidates arose when Hariri’s initiative to back Frangieh became public in November. At the time, Aoun was the only March 8 candidate, and LF chief Samir Geagea was the March 14 candidate.
“I trust Hariri,” the Marada chief said, noting that only time will reveal the Future leader’s true intentions.
He reiterated that he would be the first to head to the Parliament to vote for Aoun only “if his chances [to be elected] were higher” than his.
“My election would be a victory for the March 8 alliance and will not be a loss for the rival March 14 coalition,” Frangieh said, warning Aoun of ending any chance for a March 8 candidate to reach the Baabda Palace.

في موقفٍ لافت، ردّاً على الكلام الذي سُرّب أخيراً عن لسان العماد ميشال عون، حذّر رئيس تيار “المردة” النائب سليمان فرنجية من أنه إذا أراد رئيس تكتّل “التغيير والإصلاح” النائب ميشال عون تغيير قواعد اللعبة الديموقراطية المتعلقة بالانتخابات الرئاسيّة عبر النزول إلى الشارع، فإنّ كلّ المحرّمات ستَسقُط، وسائر الخيارات ستَحضر، ومنها خيار النزول إلى مجلس النواب في جلسة الانتخاب.
وأكّد فرنجية، في حديث لـ “الجمهوريّة”، أنه بين انتخاب مرشّح وسطي وانتخاب عون، فإنّه يؤيّد الأخير. لكنّ فرنجية أشار في الوقت نفسه الى أنّه يرفض إلغاءَ نفسه مُلبّياً رغبة عون بالانسحاب.
وكشفَ أنّ “حزب الله” لم يطلب منه لا الاستمرارَ في ترشيحه ولا الانسحاب لصالح عون، وقال: “حتى لو طلبَ “الحزب” منّي هذا الأمر، فأنا لن أُقدِم عليه ولن ألغي نفسي”.
وأكّد فرنجية أنّه يثق بالرئيس سعد الحريري. وقال، ردّاً على سؤال إذا كان يعتبر البعض أنّ تأييد الحريري لترشيحه مناورة: فلنترك الأيام تثبِت ذلك. ونفى مجدّداً أن يكون قد قدَّم أيّ التزام مسبَق للحريري أو لغيره، مؤكداً أنه اتفق مع الحريري على نقاط عامة ستكون خاضعة للتوافق الوطني في حال انتخابه رئيساً.
وشدّد فرنجية على أنه يطرح نفسَه مرشحاً توافقياً، فإذا لم يلمس أنّه سيُنتخَب بهذه الصفة فهو لن يكون مستعجلاً. وأبدى كلّ تقدير لعون، مُكرِّراً أنه كان ولا يزال عند موقفِه إنه مع العماد عون إذا كانت للأخير حظوظ في الرئاسة.
واعتبَر فرنجية أنّ انتخابه هو انتصار لفريق “8 آذار”، وشدّد على أنه ليس خسارة لفريق “14 آذار”، مُتخوّفاً من “أن يُقدم عون بنفسه على حرق فرصة إيصال مرشّح من “8 آذار” إلى الرئاسة”.
